I think a lot of LSU fans need to erase their preconceptions about having Mettenberger means that we will have a wide open pro-style offense. We have so many very talented running backs on this team, that we could probably chalk up close to 300 yards rushing against anyone. Mett will be fine. LSU will be fine. We'll ground out wins way many more times than we will open up an aerial show.
He did? Just over 50% with 199 pass yards is not setting the world on fire. Geno Smith...Matt Barkley...Braxton Miller...they looked great.
I tend to agree. Bad calls are part of the game, just like bad weather and injuries. We can only hope they get spread around evenly. On Hillard's long TD run, our wideout came inside and blatantly held a NT linebacker. No call.
But that has been the formula for almost winning it all. We could not throw the ball effectively last season, especially with Jefferson in the game. A half dozen teams just put 8 in the box and dared us to make them pay for it. We got by on talent against some good teams and a couple of very good teams. But Bama had an exceptional defense that could take risks without really taking risks. When they lined up 8, they stopped us cold and a few short passes were not going to break them out of it. Still, if Les had not lost his fucking mind on offense, we could have beaten the 21 points Bama posted. yes, but we must develop the capacity to put on an aerial show on demand exactly when we need it. Sporadic don't cut it.
+1 I'm to the point that I think the real problem is CLM himself. He has no confidence in passing, and thus, does not develope it. We are seeing the same pass plays this year that we saw last year .. WR screens .. a few quick slants, and long hail mary's. So .. now we have this QB who has the reputation to throw the ball .. and what does CLM do .. the same thing he did last year. Makes you wonder just how bad Lee and JJ really were ... or was it the play calling and the stubborn attitude that we will win it all with the run, .. that made them both look pathetic [I've said all along that the Play Calling is what beat us last year]. I don't want a PAC 10 aerial show .... but dang .... teams have to know that we have a competent pass attack that goes beyond the WR screen. I would have liked to see Mett air it out a bit more in mid level passes ... like to the TE .. some running back screens like TR3 ran all last year, some WR 10-15 yard passes. I mean .. really .. mix it up a bit! Like I said .. and everyone else knows .. yeah .. we CAN RUN THE BALL .. we and everyone knows it. But that's the problem .. all we can do is run the ball. .. but we have the athletes to do more.
No, in the SEC (especially the SEC West) running the ball well won't be enough. It is the very definition of one-dimensional! Assuming that "The Mett" is as good a passer as we have heard, holding him back--against Bama, R-Kansas and the like--is gonna hurt us. Why be content with a hamburger in a steak house? We can have it all!
You gotta admit though Tap, there is an ongoing issue with our offense. I mean don't get me wrong, we run block well, we run the ball well, but the passing game and play calling have been consistently bad. We saw some nice passes from Mettenberger last night, but we saw alot of bullshit play calling. I like the bubble screen, but maybe once a game, not 4 or 5 times. We haven't seen an LSU quarterback throw the damn football since Jarrett Lee his freshman year. Did those pick 6's really just blow it for every quarterback for the rest of Miles life? This is my opinion, it may be frowned upon, blasted, disagreed with, whatever, I don't care. I think that Les was willing to let Jimbo Fisher and Gary Crowton run the offense, UNTIL the beginning of the 2009 season, which was after Les took so much heat when Lee threw all the pick sixes. Les took over, and while he may not call the exact plays, I think it's his offensive scheme, his game plan, and every play is run through him and approved by him. Why is it we see the same exact play calling with 3 different quarterbacks, minus the zone read? You can't tell me that's Steve Kragthorpe or Greg Studrawa's offense, you just can't. I remember watching Kragthorpe at Louisville, that's not his offense.
my only problem is the pass blocking, Mett has it and we need to protect him because the cat can throw the rock. The defense will be fine. The Bama comparison doesnt apply. They played a top 10 team that shouldnt have been, but they were jacked for the game. We played N. Texas and it showed after half time.
McCarrion looked crisp...quick release. After Mett got hit he looked sluggish, to me...so, instead of McCarrion looking better than Mett, how about this... Mett looked a lot better than Jefferson !!
