Best comment I have seen so far!! I agree 100%, LSU is a very dominate running team, and just the running game will beat MOST of our opponents, but against a great defense like bama, we will HAVE to be able to throw it also.....not 25 pass attempts, but play action to the tight end, or go route and backs out the back field about 15 times per game, and that forces defences to not crowd the line a scrimage and allows the run game to be even more succesfull.
I'm not trying to judge them at the start. It's just that "feeling" you get sometimes. I hope you are right!! ... that it was just a vanilla game plan. But I could go back to last years post and drag up thread after thread of "when are we going to open up the playbook". We said the same things last year. .... all the way to the NCG ... where again, it was a very vanilla game plan .. and it got our butts kicked. This weekend should put an end to all the speculation. Washington is no NTS. ... Granted .. they aren't a Bama either. But this I know. We will not beat Bama with just the Run! Their run defense is among the best in the nation, and I didn't see much of a step back from last year in the Michigan Game. If we don't have a good passing threat, they will shut down the run, and not even worry about the pass. I think what I'm wanting to see is a tad more variety in the passes we throw. The 10-15 yard down field passes. Develope the tight end ... swing out screens to the RB. Most of all .. I'm wanting to see our pass game perform on demand .. as another poster stated earlier. A confidence in our passing game that when it is third and 8, you're confident that a pass will be completed for the first. But if you don't develope it .. it won't be there.
REALLY???? Last year we had one of the most Talented tight ends in the country(hands wise) yet we still did not throw it to him often, that's game plan issue's.
He got cut because he is not a pro type tight end....a 6-6 to 6-8 guy that weighs 260-280lbs ......he was basically a big reciever that was to slow to play a wideout, and made a very good catching tight end in the college level.
Tough crowd. You guys realize North Texas played their safeties deep most of the night right? Hence 300+ yards rushing. They made it easy to run the ball. Take what the defense gives you. I finally had a chance to really watch the game last night and I guess I just don't see what Mett did so poorly that has everyone here to worried. We played quick strike and he delivered the ball. The INT was a mistake but as another poster pointed out, the right side of our line didn't do much for protection there either. He tried to thread the needle. The fact that he tried tells me he probably CAN make that kind of throw. He made another like that to Boone earlier in the game. I guess fans want to see us uncork a 400 yard passing game. I certainly understand that. But I didn't see anything to make me believe Mett isn't capable of doing just that. He looks very capable. I'm more concerned about O-Line in pass protection than Mett. But seriously, safeties playing 2-deep and corners playing man most of the game...run the football. Simple.
we averaged 7 yards per carry v N Texas, the only BCS teams that had a better ypc getting to 275 plus rushing yards in their opener were Oklahoma St (vs Savannah State), West Virginia (vs Marshall), Kansas St (vs Missouri State) and UCLA (vs Rice)
of the 14 SEC teams, only 4 were able to hit 500 yards of offense in their opener: LSU, Arkansas (v Jacksonville St), Tennessee (v NC State), Ole Miss (v Central Arkansas) note: Texas A&M hasn't played yet
Christ, who here has complained about Mett? It was the play calling, the same as the past 4 years, that has people critical. As well as poor secondary coverage, no sacks, and poor pass blocking..
