regarding a balanced offense, compare the season openers of LSU and Alabama: Bama: 21 passes, 42 rushes (67% run) LSU: 26 passes, 46 rushes (64% run) completions of 7 yards or more: 10 by Bama (51, 28, 26, 19, 16, 15, 13, 12, 10, 7...all by McCarron) 10 by LSU (34, 33, 21, 19, 12, 11, 11, 10, 7, 7...all by Mett) completions over 40...1 by Bama, 0 by LSU 30-40...2 by LSU, 0 by Bama 20-30...2 by Bama, 1 by LSU 10-20...6 by Bama, 5 by LSU
I agree with everything else you said but this Red. I think the issue with his accuracy was far more due to that hit he took early in the game. I honestly think he might have had a concussion and had cobwebs in his head for quite awhile after that. The best part of the game to me was late in the 3rd (I think) when LSU had a bad series and on the sideline Mett got in the face of his guys on the sideline, you could definitely see he was pissed about how they were playing. The next series out there was when he had the pass to Shepard that was called back and then the following series was the TD pass one. He showed good leadership and had a lot of fire.
I rewatched that goal-line interception Mett threw today. 1) He should've thrown it away because... 2) Lonergan and Williford gave up on a double team block of a UNT Linebacker who got into Mett's face quick I fault those two guys for giving up on a play as much as I do Mett throwing a pick.
Yes, he may have been shaken up a bit. But I very much doubt that they would have put him back into the game with a concussion.
The rules prevent him from going back in with a concussion. He would have to pass all the test they give and from what I hear it is pretty hard to fake it. If you have a concussion they know it and will not risk putting you back in. It was more of a whiplash concern than a head injury.
Really all of that from the first game of the year? Not a fair comparison for both teams, Bama looked really good, but also played a top ten team, so they had all of the playbook in there, what was most impressive about bama is both of their lines were simply dominating. As far LSU you can not make an assesment on the north Texas game, it was a very very vanilla gameplan, i was dissapointed in out O-line, but I'm sure they were not really off the charts ready to play that game, with that being said, if Mett and the offens can average 200-250 yds passing per game, lsu will be a force to be reckoned with. I was a little dissapointed with Mett(think my expectations were to high) as far as mobility, escapability, and reading progressions. He WILL get better and as he gets better, this offense could be LSU's best ever or close to it. Defense front 7 looks very good, I'm a little worried about our secondary, hopefully game experience will get them where they need to be. All in All.......LSU/Alabama game in Novemeber will set up the national picture again! I like LSU's chances there!
That's why being one dimensional sucks. Because if the one thing you do well on offense isn't working, you're in trouble. That's been the argument for the people frustrated with the offense the whole time. It's not that you can't be successful. It's just that, eventually, it will bite you in the ass. We can't expect the running game, defense, and special teams to be on top of their game all season. We have an insane amount of talent which masks our deficiencies in the passing game. You can't count on beating Bama being one dimensional on offense. The likelyhood is that we will go 11-1 with a loss to Alabama. I'm not going to stress about it anymore. It is what it is. Les Miles has the program in great shape. Alabama is just in better shape as it appears right now. I believe if we fix or O-line woes and actually let Mett practice the things we will need to beat Bama, then I believe we can beat them.
