I really liked Ryan while at LSU, but I figured he'd be unlikely to make it in the league just due to his frame and the demands of the position. One thing football coaches at any level but since we're discussing the pros here the NFL coaches and scouts cannot measure heart and instincts. Ryan had boundless amounts of each, and we see why he's on one of the best defenses the league touts yearly in Pittsburgh. McCray was absolutely roasted while at LSU (by the fans and opponents, heh), and yet he's making a living because he's willing to do whatever it takes to better himself. Jerry Jones as a talent evaluator doesn't hurt either. Ha.

Anyway, I think it's fascinating when we see guys who were decent in college blow up the NFL and vice versa. I felt Mark Ingram would be potentially the best tailback in Saints history had he never faced injury, stayed motivated, and flash the skills that earned him the Heisman at Alabama. Hasn't happened. Meanwhile, look at a Marques Colston who was at a small school, didn't have a true position, and showed up to the rookie minicamp and could barely compete due to the heat and poor shape he was in. Now? He may well end up the team's premiere wideout when he calls it quits.

Recruiting is a huge part of the college game, obviously, but development is as important if not moreso. Five star ratings by pay sites do not help you win games on Saturday. USC is evidence of that to a significant degree.

Anyway, enjoy the heck out of your contribution, LSUDad! Great forum and a really wonderful group of folks here.
