Fascinating. I thought I read or saw on TV that there are still a few die hard (no pun intended) locals that live in the contaminated area. What kind of protective gear did you have to wear? Just a respirator or a full radiation suit?
you dont have to wear anything. you are checked for radiation on the way out, to make sure you arent carrying chunks of super radiation on your shoe or stuck to your butt . you cannot go into certain areas are and required to have a govt approved minder. you carry a radiation meter and your guide knows exactly where hot spots are, and you avoid them. my tour guide, his name was igor. he was cool and i went during the last flare up of war there so there were no tourists there but me. he was opposed to joining the EU because accordin to him " join the EU and the next thing you know, gay pride parades!". this video is of another guy taking the same tour i took, with the exact same host, igor. when i met igor with his car to drive me there in the main square in kiev he goes "american! i thought you would be fatter!"
