I just love guys who play monday morning coaches. A team that is 7-2 and has lost to 2 of the best teams in the country, is 4-2 in the SEC, and our offensive play won't work week in and week out in the SEC. So, when we end up 10-2, and 6-2 in the SEC how is it again that our offensive play won't work in the SEC again? I call that working. It may not have won 2 of our games, but I don't think that that can be blamed on our offensive style of play. A part of it yes, but not all of it. What I really find amusing is when did smash mouth football stop working in the SEC. That will continue to be the base of all the SEC offenses.
Y'all dislike that LSU-SIU dude so much that you refuse to see a lot of what he says is on point. Not everything, but a lot of it. His delivery sucks, and he could probably scale back on emphasis...over-emphasizing gets you nowhere with a tough crowd. But it's true that teams load the box against LSU with JJ as the QB. Just because he threw a beautiful TD pass doesn't change that. A passing threat keeps a defense honest. 8-9 in the box ain't honest. I don't think Bama dropped more in coverage because Lee was such a huge threat, but either way, plays were not called to take advantage of the openings Bama willingly gave. I don't believe it's JJ's fault though. Some of the sacks have been his fault. And he's got to give his playmakers a chance to make plays even if they're covered. If those guys are single covered, THEY AIN'T COVERED. I think Crowton is a bit of a letdown as an OC. I don't believe he knows what to do with this much talent. Get rid of that freakin option to the short side. Every team knows he's gonna pitch it...and they know he's gonna pitch it too soon. Trindon is a gimmick, not a RB. They're better off direct snapping him than handing off to him. I thought Les had a big hand in the playcalling, but post-Tulane told me differently unless it was just coach speak. But he said something to the affect of hoping Crowton would play Ridley more snaps. That sounded to me like Crowton has control of the offense...which I would certainly want if I was OC. But Miles can't like what he sees with much of the playcalling. With that said, I don't think Crowton should be fired, but I don't think he should have 100% control...IF that's the case. I honestly believe Crowton is still learning as well. I know he has a ton of experience, but not a ton of experience with this much in the cupboard. He's like a great chef, who's pantry is overloaded, so he keeps cooking stuff that noone likes. He knows noone likes it, but maybe they'll start to like it because he doesn't think it tastes that bad. Meanwhile, he cooks a great crawfish bisque, but he only serves it once per week even though everyone is asking for more bisque. I know it's seasonal, but can you serve it just a little more? LOL. The crawfish bisque was that beautiful play we ran two straight times to R.J. Jackson. It was beautiful even though the 2nd one got called back for that flinch by Barksdale. They didn't run it again. I know many will not agree, especially since I kind of agreed with the enemy, but it pains me to see an offense with so much potential not live up to it when it APPEARS it's the coaching holding it back, not the players.
I keep seeing all these compliments about JJ and don't get it. I just think he is ok. Does anyone think he is one of the top 10 QB's in college right now? To me, that is a 'really good' QB and JJ is not up there ..... yet. I wonder if he would even make any impartial top 25 lists? I see so much more polish in mechanics, decisions, and overall effectiveness when I watch random other games. Clearly, JJ has done a superb job controlling the turnovers though. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying Lee is better or should start. But to me, a top ten program should have a top 10 QB. And we aren't there yet.
I think that most are making that statement in reference to how JJ has looked compared to JJ. He looked really good for JJ, thus far. I think most would acknowledge he still has some growing to do, but he is progressing every game, and that is the encouraging thing.
^this. JJ has all the makings to be a top 10 and has made improvents. Look at the few times he SOLD the option vs Bama. He is taking less sacks and doing things better. For a 19 year old 1st year QB, 64% comp is very good. Look at 2003 and 2007, none of those QB's were great, but just good enough. I think JJ is just a bit under them now and come the end of JJ's career at LSU, he could leave one of the best.
