Private school. They can create shit out of thin air. They can be like “oh we have a sports players history scholarship ship just for you!”
Full ride is a bit of an exaggeration, but they absolutely can (and do) give out above the 11.7 that public schools are limited to. because it’s not listed as an athletic scholarship. lots of private schools have similar programs for all students where money does not prevent a student from attending. the schools picks up the tab for those that are admitted but can’t swing the ridiculous price of tuition. and because they offer it for every student, it’s not a violation for them to do it for athletes as well. So for example, stud pitcher from somewhere in Tejas has offers from LSU and Vandy .... LSU having to split up the 11.7 schollies offer the kid 25% scholarship. Kid has to come up with remaining $25,000/year himself. Vandy on the other hand offers him the entire cost of attendance (or even just a noticeable chunk) through their grant program and he doesn’t count at all against the 11.7. so while LSU can only give out a total of 11.7 scholarships per year, Vandy can theoretically give out the 11.7 from the NCAA. Then still give out partial scholly money to the remaining 23.3 kids on the 35 man roster.
nah, they don’t even have to hide it like that. Vandy, Tulane, and Rice for sure all have programs that just straight up cover large chunks of tuition for those who “can’t afford it”. Available to any student admitted to the school (other than Football and Basketball players because those schollies are counted differently).
