Texas Tech transfer considering LSU, others
An otherwise quiet recruiting year might get a big boost in the next few days for the LSU mens basketball program.
Former Richwood-Monroe star Terry Martin Jr. was released from his scholarship at Texas Tech last week and will enroll at a new school in time for spring classes next week.
His father, Richwood coach Terry Martin Sr., said Monday that LSU is one of the leaders in the new recruiting derby for his son, a 6- foot-5 guard.
That is definitely one of the schools hes taking a close look at, Martin Sr. said. Hes at home right now looking at things and trying to figure out what to do next. He hasnt said anything to me about any other schools, but I know hes interested in LSU.
Several attempts to contact Martin Jr. were unsuccessful.
Martin Sr. said his sons main reason for transferring was to get closer to home. Published reports provided the same reason.
In a story published Sunday in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas Tech coach Bob Knight said We agreed that this is not the right program for him and we wish him well in wherever he goes. Martin was not on the bench for the Red Raiders 66-59 loss at Texas A&M.
On Monday, the Monroe News-Star reported that Martin Jr. will consider transferring to a local university.
There are strong indications that school could be LSU.
By NCAA rule, Tigers coaches are not permitted to comment on a potential transfer until he has officially been released from a scholarship agreement. That process has been started according to Texas Techs compliance officer Jennifer Brashear.
The paperwork on that has been initiated and is in process, Brashear said. It should all be done by (today), and its my understanding that we are working with LSU.
Should the Tigers land Martin, he would be the second high- profile transfer to choose LSU in the last year. Junior Dameon Mason moved to LSU after starting for two years at Marquette and is sitting out this season. He will have two years remaining when he takes the floor next fall.
If Martin were to enroll at LSU for the spring semester, he would have to sit out the rest of this season and the first semester next year. He would have the second semester next season and two full years of eligibility left in a Tiger uniform.
This season Martin was averaging 7.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists a game and was shooting 38.1 percent (16 of 42) from 3- point range. He started the first eight games of the season, and twice scored 14 points. But he struggled in Texas Techs 90-72 road loss at San Francisco on Dec. 3 and his playing time had steadily dwindled since then.
Over the last four games prior to the Texas A&M road trip, Martin Jr. had scored only 27 points and turned the ball over 17 times playing mostly in mop-up duty. However, in his last outing with Tech on Jan. 1, Martin buried three 3-pointers and scored 13 points to help the Red Raiders outlast Texas-El Paso 61-60.
As a senior at Richwood in 2005, Martin averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists a game and helped lead the Rams to the Class 3A state championship, their first since 1983. He was named the 3A Outstanding Player by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Martin played point guard for Richwood, but was recruited by Knight as a shooting guard. He could also play small forward for the Tigers, who will have as many as four experienced guards returning next season.

well everyone says we dont have a PG, but Tack is a good starter, and Voogd is a good backup, so I think he would be a good addition

VERY nice! Martin would be available to play in January '07 according to this? Mason will be available for the pre-sec schedule. If he does come here, talk about a quick boost to aid with the depth problems at guard!

He's gonna go to the Indians. A 3 hour drive still isn't much more palatable. Being that that's the main reason he is transferring in the first place.

Is this based upon some inside information or just your reading of the article and the 3 hour drive? Media often paints the story the way they see it, and I am gathering that the News Star is a Monroe paper hoping for the best (as is the Advocate of course) and painting the distance as being the key factor.

I can see if he wants to be the MAN at ULM and not have to compete with anyone (like D. Mason) him going there, but man he could really have an impact on LSU's team and be a part of putting LA basketball back on the national map.

ULM's roster is also filled with guards and wings...he'd be able to play with NBA quality big men at LSU, which will help his career.

Wow! Tigers win a close and need-boost-of-confidence game against Arkansas tonight! :geauxtige

As for Terry Martin Jr., Rivals is reporting today that it looks good for the Tigers. Terry is visiting LSU tomorrow... on the heels of a gutsy, feel good road win against tough Arkansas.

This report comes a day later than the News Star report. This could be a huge week for the Tigers! Tonight's win is a great start.
