I wasn't aware Sumlin wasn't an offensive guy, guess I was wrong and waaaaaay off earlier in this thread.
one of Kingsbury's mentors, WVU coach Dana Holgorsen, told Chris Level (publisher of Red Raider Sports, co-host of Tech Talk radio show, and sideline reporter for TTU Football)... Chris Level @ ChrisLevel Holgorsen to me on #TexasTech 's hiring of Kingsbury: Really happy for him and Tech. Finally can move forward. He will do great.
check out this offensive dream team Mike Leach put in place when he took over as Texas Tech coach in 2000, when Kingsbury was a redshirt sophomore. this season, these four just coached the #1, #2, #3 and #8 best offenses in the NCAA, in addition to the last two Heisman winners (RG3, Manziel) and the QB some project as the #1 QB in the draft (Geno Smith). 1998 Kingsburg QB (redshirt) 1999 Kingsburg QB 2000 Kingsburg QB, Leach (HC/OC), Briles (RB), Dykes (WR), Holgorsen (inside receivers) 2001 Kingsburg QB, Leach (HC/OC), Briles (RB), Dykes (WR), Holgorsen (inside receivers) 2002 Kingsburg QB, Leach (HC/OC), Briles (RB), Dykes (WR), Holgorsen (inside receivers)
as a player, Sumlin was a LB, but as a coach, Sumlin has always coached on the offensive side of the ball, mostly as a WR coach. he was only an offensive coordinator for two years: 2001-2002 at Texas A&M under coach RC Slocum. Sumlin's best offense as OC was the #47 total O, #49 scoring O in the NCAA. in 2002, RC Slocum got fired, and it appears that nobody wanted Sumlin as an OC, because the next year he became the TE coach and special teams coach at Oklahoma, which he did from 2003-2005. from 2006-2007, he was the WR coach and "Co-OC" for Oklahoma, but everybody knew that the real OC was Kevin Wilson (who won the Broyles Award as the nation's best assistant coach while OC at Oklahoma. He left Oklahoma to become head coach at Indiana last year) when Sumlin became the head coach of Houston in 2008, he took over for Mike Leach protege Art Briles (the current head coach at Baylor). since Briles had been establishing the Mumme/Leach "Air Raid" spread offense at Houston for the 5 years before Sumlin got there, it made good sense for Sumlin to hire another Leach protege, Dana Holgorsen, to continue to run the Mumme/Leach "Air Raid" spread offense at Houston. when Holgorsen left, it made sense to promote another Leach protege, Kliff Kingsbury, to continue to run the Mumme/Leach "Air Raid" spread offense now that Kingsbury is gone, it will be very interesting to see who Sumlin hires next to run the offense. unless Sumlin can find another Leach protege, then, like Texas A&M OL Patrick Lewis tweeted, "the (Texas A&M) O may have to start over"
Texas Tech had the #92 scoring D in the nation, that is pretty crappy The best defenses in the Big 12 were (scoring D/total D)... #18/#35 - TCU #24/#43 - K State Also, Texas Tech didn't "let Tuberville walk" ... the Cincy AD Babcock said this about going after Tubbs: “I was trying to do it in a way that nobody would have known about it" Babcock said during a press conference introducing Tuberville to fans, boosters and media members in Cincinnati that he was “a bit embarrassed” that he didn't discuss the situation with (Texas Tech AD) Hocutt first The move came as a major shock to Tech officials and players. Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he received a phone call from Cincinnati athletic director Whit Babcock at 9:15 a.m., which Hocutt let go to voicemail because he was watching his son’s soccer game. At 10:30 a.m., Tuberville called Hocutt and said he would resign as Tech’s coach to take the same position at Cincinnati. Hocutt was caught off guard. “As recently as yesterday (Tuberville) looked me in the eye and gave me his commitment and dedication to Texas Tech football,” Hocutt said on Saturday, “and leading this football program forward.”
