http://espn.go.com/dallas/college-f...-kingsbury-hired-texas-tech-red-raiders-coach Big loss for the Aggies..
I'm not so sure, Sumlin is the brains, Kingsbury is a former TT qb under Leach, similar offenses, very similar, yet I'm not sure Kingsbury had much control of A&M's offense.
Yes this has no impact. Just like Petrino at Arkansas Saban at Alabama. Coordinators are expendable and nothing more than an agent to the head coach. Kirby Smart I am sure is a great coach but he does nothing but execute the vision of Saban. Saban is the defensive coordinator pure and simple Now LSU. Different story. Chavis is the architect of our defense. Miles is a CEO type. Hence the need for us to have a very strong OC. Which we don't have. I love Miles but what makes him so successful is very different than the Sumlin types. But Sumlin, Saban, Malzhan all those guys are the drivers. Now those guys can take that vision and bring it to new teams (See Pilini, Muschamp, Fisher, etc)
It's a PR win for them for sure, they get a piece of the Leach era back without Leach. That's the Texas Tech glory years, I'm sure the fans are very happy, Kingsbury had a great career there. Now, the question is, will he be able to win?
Tubbs had 'em on the right track back to the glory days, though. They were stupid to let him walk. They were the only team in the Big12-2 with a defense, which is a huge advantage in that shit conference.
Sumlin lets Kingsbury call all the offensive plays and its been that way since Kingsbury has been the OC. Sumlin is an ex-Big Ten LB and look who Sumlin's offensive coordinators have been during his 5 years as a head coach, two Mike Leach proteges: Dana Holgorsen and Kliff Kingsbury 2008 Houston -- Dana Holgorsen (Kliff Kingsbury was under him) 2009 Houston -- Dana Holgorsen (Kliff Kingsbury was under him) 2010 Houston -- Kliff Kingsbury 2011 Houston -- Kliff Kingsbury 2012 Texas A&M -- Kliff Kingsbury Dana Holgorsen: both him and Leach were on Hal Mumme's coaching staff together, then when Leach went to Texas Tech, Holgorsen went with him, and stayed with Leach for the next 8 years, including serving as Leach's OC the last 3 years. He's the current coach of West Virginia (who is currently #8 in the NCAA in total offense) Kliff Kingsbury: four years as QB under Mike Leach at Texas Tech, two years under Dana Holgorsen at Houston while Sumlin was a WR coach under Joe Tiller at Purdue for 3 years (where Sumlin played LB as a player), i don't see anything in Sumlin's background that makes me think he's been trained in the Hal Mumme "Air Raid" spread offense popularized by Hal Mumme/Mike Leach and those that have coached under them: --Art Briles, coach of Baylor (who is currently #1 in the NCAA in total offense), coach of Houston before that, RB coach for Mike Leach at Texas Tech for 3 years before that --Sonny Dykes and Tony Franklin, the new head coach and OC of Cal, and were the head coach and OC of La Tech for the last 3 years (La Tech is currently #2 in the NCAA in total offense). one coached under Leach at Texas Tech, the other coached alongside Leach under Hal Mumme at Kentucky --Dana Holgorsen, coach of West Virginia (who is currently #8 in the NCAA in total offense) --Kliff Kingsbury, new coach of Texas Tech
I'm guessing you didn't hear... http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf...RhaWQDBHBzdGNhdANibG9nBHB0A3NlY3Rpb25z;_ylv=3
No I did hear about that. But I still think it was a mistake for TT to not make TT happy. He's a weasel, but a good coach.
