Well that wasn't what they were actually asking for. They said he needs their permission and he was offering to inform them. In the end. They allowed him to just inform them as it should be.
I kind've expected Leach to come back to Lubbock. He coaches in a conference that allows him to succeed, a pass-happy league that certainly welcomes the system he employs. Besides, there weren't many job openings around the power conferences, so Texas Tech was the logical destination here.
They also wanted all of the money he ever made from speaking engagements, book deals, etc. That's a wholly unreasonable clause, and the AD had to know it. If that AD thinks for one second that he's more important to TT than Leach, he may need to reevaluate his life.
You seem to have a overly high opinion of Leach. No one is above the program at any school and all can be replaced. He's just a coach that runs a gimmicky offense. Yeah they had a good year in the pass happy, no defense Big 12 Big deal. They couldn't even win the Cotton Bowl. Has Leach ever pulled a single high profile kid away from Texas, OU or LSU? No one that I can think of. Until that happens, what they did last year is the best they will ever be. that being said, I think that TT is cool with that, but they just want to get some assurance that if they make a commitment to Leach that he does the same. As for the speaking money, I don't know anything about specifically. However, it just sounds like taking money from one hand and putting it in the other. TT may pay him more and keep the speaking money or pay him less and let him keep it. Whatever...its the final number that matters.
This is Texas Tech. The program was nowhere without him, had gone nowhere, and was going nowhere. They'll easily settle into that rut if Leach leaves. It's a c-grade program, competing against a couple of the nation's elite programs. The oddball clauses, especially on outside income, were nothing more than a cheap shot at Leach. I have no axe to grind at all with this. I think Leach is an innovative coach and he's a perfect fit for an also-ran program like TT. He wouldn't fit with the big boys, and that's fine. I just find the heavy handedness from a pissant program to be laughable.
