ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 to announce alliance plans
    https://www.oregonlive.com/collegef...-12-to-announce-alliance-plans-ap-source.html

The leagues announced that a video news conference would be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, est, with the three commissioners

The person said the ACC, Big and Pac-12 hope an alliance of 41 schools that span from Miami to Seattle leads to “stabilization” and thwarts future realignment.

Not because it's a coveted TV market, but because it's full of Alabama fans, which is exactly my point. If a team has a lot of fans, it doesn't matter what TV market they're in. Same as Baton Rouge and Gainesville, it's not the TV markets that bring value.

A&M, Texas, and Oklahoma are valuable because they have a ton of fans, not because the College Station, Norman, and Austin TV markets are valuable (though Austin is).

There is some residual effect from the days of regional broadcast television, which is how these teams developed their value initially, but it has been irrelevant for a long time.

This will all come down to how they decide to use it. Because games like Oregon State vs. Wake Forest will still mean piss all. They need to ensure they’re scheduling power houses vs. other power houses. Ohio State, Oregon, Clemson, etc.

Folks are not tuning into Minnesota vs. Arizona or Rutgers vs. Duke anymore or less than they already would.

OT: They've been looking for more investors—recently with the NT Times considering purchasing the group—and having a hard time finding the extra money. So, in the investment world, evidently not.

They must be paying a lot on advertising as well as local writers in every major sports market. When I google a Dallas or Louisiana sport topic they are usually high on the search and they have a strong presence on FB. I often inadvertently click on a link and reach their paywall. Usually it is just a news piece and I can google the topic and get the info somewhere else. I wonder if the original content they provide is worth the subscription.

SI put up a paywall. I don't really miss their original content.

Pac-12 alliance is a punch back at SEC and ESPN
    https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/j...alliance-is-a-punch-back-at-sec-and-espn.html

Absent on Tuesday was any hint of the NCAA. It’s lost clout. Make note of that.

Forgive the pundits who woke up drunk and took another sip from the SEC’s spiked punch bowl. They missed the point. Also excuse those who still believe ESPN is still first a news agency and not the money-printing event company it has become.

Window dressing... the critics called it.
    Arm waving... they termed it.

ESPN’s primary channels didn’t even bother to carry the live news conference that announced a ground-breaking alliance between the Pac-12, Big Ten and ACC on Tuesday. They left it to the Pac-12 Network, the ACC Network and the Big Ten Network. Wrap your head around that. Then sober up and consider that what we saw this week from 41 major universities was a punch back at those who are trying to run away with the keys to major college athletics

Pac12's,George Kliavkoff, sat up straight alongside Kevin Warren of the Big Ten and the ACC commissioner Jim Phillips, and they basically talked about the SEC/ESPN without talking about the SEC/ESPN.

Those two entities are married now.

None of us were invited to the wedding. But it’s evident that the SEC and ESPN are in this together over the next decade, for better or — even better. The SEC and ESPN went to great lengths on Tuesday to pretend there was nothing to see here. But down deep, I think the happy couple knows they’ve fostered a troubling divide in college athletics. One the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 apparently don’t have to live with.

I think in the end, wont amount to much outside some anual cross-conf games with severly jet-lagged B-list teams.

The eventual 16 team SEC conf may have more teams in the top 15 than nearly all of their 41 combined. Maybe even the top 25.

I love the continuous reference to education and research. Like a bunch of inter-conference starting FB players are curing cancer. This is being done for one reason and thats to maintain any semblance of leverage on ESPN. Cash is king, the rich get richer, and so on...
