One of the scriptures of the Church of Skepticism is "if a truth sounds unlikely, it is unlikely to be true." And I am a bigoted, wholehearted devotee of skepticism.

This is a terrible and useless point.

Do you wear your seatbelt for fear of a crash? Yes. So what. It doesn't mean you drive around scared. This is just a nonsense point I have no clue why you are making.

Its a dumb point but you have no problem chiming in with a stupid analogy. That's not even apples and oranges that's kiwis and dog shit. If you carry around a gun you are in fear for your life, even if you choose to not admit it. People do stupid shit when they are scared. More innocent people will die as a result of this, there will be more dead people killed by cowboys who think they are John Wayne stopping a perpetrator.

We'd probably be swopping the occasional "lunatic kills many" shooting for the occasional "couple of hotheads shoot it out and one dies" shooting. I'll take that.

I'm okay with no guns at schools if they are controlled access with metal detectors -- like legislatures have. Having the rule with voluntary compliance is naive.

Interesting side note: taxi driver is one the most dangerous professions in America. One of my best drinking pals here in queens New York is a cabbie. It's a crazy job. My friend is white, but most cabbies here in New York are south Asian or African. All of them are very racist. One could make an argument that their racism is justified, given their experiences and the way they have been treated.

This is why divers prefer uber, because the passengers are identified and the transaction is cashless. No risk of a 30 dollar fare to The Bronx running out without paying. This happens to my cabbie friend all the time. I ask him what he does, he says nothing. He isn't gonna risk getting shot to chance down people over. 30 dollar fare. Again, if you are a racist, you would be interested by the fact that white people never run out on fares. Never.

The times when a guy robs you and shoots you just for good measure afterwards are so rare such that I don't think it warrants carrying a heavy ass gun all the time. In fact when I had an attempted mugging, the guy wasn't armed. he was trying to strong arm me, like that kid Michael brown does before he was killed.

If you carry a gun your are not In fear for your life. Even if it is for protection. The seat belt analogy is perfect. I wear my seatbelt because I technically am in fear of dying in a crash. But that's just not how you should look at it. When I carry a gun, or Buckle my belt, I am less scared than i was before.

I could make a stronger argument that gun carrying makes people less in fear.

You are not going to accept any analogy. You suck at knowing whether somebody is scared or not. I carry tools in my truck in case I need them, Most of the time I don't. A gun is a tool for self defense as much as a wrench is a tool for changing an auto part. I am not anymore afraid that I might be assaulted than I am that I may need to use my wrench.

The only time I experience actual fear is when I get on an airplane. I'm not worried about being hjjacked. I worry about the plane crashing. I know it's irrational and I fly anyway but planes do crash. Nobody I have personally known has ever been killed in a plane crash. (OK, I did meet Stevie Ray Vaughn a couple of times before he was famous) In 1982 a plane crashed into a Kenner neighborhood while taking off from the New Orleans airport. Killed everybody on board and a few people in the houses it hit. A guy I knew lost 9 members of his family who were going to Vegas.

I am you have heard this before but the drive to the airport is more dangerous than the flight by like 100x. Flying around is about as dangerous as sleeping.
