and just like drunk driving, we keep applying laws until we see the deaths decrease. The laws we have now obviously aren't working, so instead of throwing our hands up in the air we keep working at it.

We don't have laws in place that hold people accountable for selling guns to people who shouldn't have them.

If a guy passes the background check and then misuses the gun the seller is in no way responsible

Excuse me but there is no way that can be possible. Look at the recent cases of murder mass murder etc in South Carolina, Connecticut Washington DC, Ft Bragg etc ALL the weapons were procured legally. Most individual murders of passion are usually so far removed from the purchase it would be laughable to hold the seller responsible. Rarely does someone go into a store buy a gun and go out and kill another person. I guess we should hold the Fords accountable for the deaths that their cars are involved in.
HOW DO YOU TELL IF SOMEONE IS STABLE ENOUGH TO BUY A GUN? Do all gun store clerks need to be lisenced psychotherapists? It's not like a bartender cutting off a drunk.
It would be patently impossible to do something like that.
In the case of illegal purchases there is accountability to the seller. However try catching them.
Point is, it's easy to say what you advocate but in the weeds there is so much crap to make it unworkable.

If I have a gun store and a guy tells me he is going to kill his wife or rob a bank I'm not going to sell him a gun even if he passed the background check. Other than that how am I responsible for what he does with it?

No more than if I sell a knife and the buyer stabs somebody with it.
