I think the reason plane crashes are so scary is that you have no control. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Also, generally everyone dies in a plane crash so it's not like you'll just have scrapes and bruises. I get nervous in heavy turbulence but that's it.

There are shootings every day reported in the Baton Rouge newspaper. Almost all of them occur in bad neighborhoods. Most are drug related. Here are a few cases of respectable armed citizens using their firearms to bring the punks to justice. There are lots more if you look for them.

I think, like the life preserver and seatbelt analogies, it just means that you acknowledge the possibility and are taking steps to prepare....that's a lot different from fear.

That assumes if you drop the gun free zone law, all 33,000 students will go out and arm themselves. It would more likely be just a fraction, but no one will really know who is armed and who isn't. That's the protection from the mass murderer; the fact that he just won't know, and may not be willing to take the chance.

I could also get struck by lightning, not gonna wear a lightning suit everywhere (if that's even a thing). My microwave could blow up and kill me. Should I wear a bomb suit while taking my chicken pot pie out? My television could fall on me, if I lose the remote should I wear a helmet while changing the channel from the tv?

Even red knows that only a small percentage of students and faculty will opt to arm themselves on campus.

Don't be ridiculous. If a thunderstorm was approaching while you were playing golf you would get off of the course. If a thunderstorm came up while you were in a boat you would head for shelter. That's just taking reasonable precautions. Like carrying a gun just in case.

is your argument that if people try to manage risk in any way they are scared?

No, preparing for risk is one thing, preparing for the highly fucking unlikely is fear or maybe just lunacy, take your pick.

And I have no issues with guns or guns in your home, I just don't think everyone and their mom should be packing one on their person.
