Is it just me or do teams just stack the box daring us to pass it? Not until we've finally gone vertical a few times do they back off, yet we don't seem to go vertical until way too late in the game. Our running game would benefit immensely if we just made teams respect the pass from the very beginning. Has anyone else noticed this trend? Seriously, go back and watch our last few games and look at how many guys they put in the box against us... then, after we've finally figured this out (which usually takes about half the damn game) we start throwing it around some and what do ya know, the strong safety backs up into a "passing" cover 2 formation and we can RUN and PASS. If I notice this, I can't imagine the DC's of our opponents don't. I fully expect Ole Miss to kepp 8 to 9 in the box unless it's 3rd and longer than 7 and I'm going to be severely disappointed in our coaching staff if we haven't scouted our own team and noticed this trend. What yall think?

PS: I know no one likes Debbie Downer after a win, I don't mean it that way, it's just something I'd like to see discussed.

As soon as LSU shows a good passing game that's not prone to turnovers, the box should clear up. Until then, teams would be fools to just let Hester & Co. run it down their throat.

One thing I HAVE noticed is that teams seem to key off of our I formation. I forget which announcer said it - probably Hawthorne - but we run something like 90% of the time out of that formation. Maybe that contributes to what you are seeing?

Honestly - the OLine is getting better, but quality defensive fronts have been pressuring the QB all year long, and that has hurt our ability to run longer routes and take advantage of a stacked box (I like saying that for some reason.) Later in the game, the opposing defense is tired (because our offense has been pretty good this year) and the QB gets more time. That's my take on it so far.

For what it's worth, I think with Doucet and Flynn healthy and RP back in the mix, we may see just what you seem to be hankering for - more play action on first down. :hihi: Perhaps to the tight ends!

That's what I'm talking about.... running 90% out of the I... I mean come on. I thought this was supposed to be the "new" offense that's unpredictable and is better passing. I heard some coaches say before that sometimes the best way to get better is to watch your own game film and basically scout your own team as if you were the opponent instead of just going over your previous game and looking at only the other team. It would show much of our tendencies and since most of our issues are of our own doing I think it would be especially helpful for this team. Maybe they're doing it, I don't know.

I would just like to see an innovative game plan on offense against Ole Miss. One that we nor Ole Miss expects. One that lets us put this game away sooner rather than later. I think if we play like we have the 2nd half of the season that Ole Miss will be able to stay in the game until the end b/c everyone knows what we're doing. You can't win every game by just lining up and going straight at the guy and just counting on your "superior talent". I think we need to be more clever than that. It may work against Ole Miss yet again, but will we be able to get away with it vs Arkansas and then Tenn/UGA?

12-1 after the month of November begins. Remember last year when he took some heat because he said that it matters more how you play in November than early in the year? Not so silly now.

they pass down the field early more than you remember. they just dont connect. besides, i dont think crowton tells mf to hit byrd on a post. a play is called with several options and mf makes a read and decision.

besides, you should be careful what you ask for. wasnt it the MTSU game (Tulane, maybe) where lsu was taking shots downfield on 1st down all the time. they didnt connect and there were several 3 and outs in the first quarter/half.

That's the Miles Big 10 philosphy shining through. When Crowton was at BYU and LaTech, they had wide open attacks. 5 receiver set, empty back fields, ect. Obviously, you need a running game in the SEC, but I agree with you as far as self scouting goes. The I-formation is fine, as is running the ball. But the 90% stat is telling. The offense could definitely benefit from studying tendencies and deviating from them.

Which game are you referring to? Byrd was covered like a blanket when he caught the winning TD vs Auburn. The same with Doucet in the Alabama game.
