Miles and Chavis used to recruit two year players, promising they could get them drafted. I'm sure everyone does this to an extent, but they really did not bring in student athletes, just athletes. These kind of guys will bolt for the money the first chance they get. I know it happens everywhere but we don't seem to recruit the kind of guys who stay in school.
Who does he fire? The Orgeron "business model" is to hire the best coordinators and let them make the decisions. What does he do when Canada and Aranda move on in the next 2-3 years for HC gigs? And so far his one strength as a coach, recruiting, is not leading to a gangbusters 2018 class. This is in no way a sustainable plan for long-term success.
I think this is talent not necessarily scheme. Etling looked like he made some progress toward the end of the game and Brennan got quality PT. Maybe OL/WR/RB? Maybe hire a new DL.
Problem is you can't have one without the other. HCs have a vision for the style of football they play. Everything from Chip Kelly to Les Miles and everything in between. That style dictates the type of players he recruits. And Les was definitely schizophrenic on what he wanted out of an offense (Crowton's spread to Cam's more traditional pro-style scheme), and that hasn't helped. But as wrong-headed as I think he was, he had an identity he wanted to establish. I don't know what Orgeron's football philosophy is, and the disturbing thing is I suspect neither does he. As for position coaches, Grimes should be first on the chopping block. His lines have shown me nothing in terms of scheme or unit improvement since he got here.
Wouldn't be the first time Moffitt has been called into question. But at the end of the day, Moffitt isn't responsible for breakdowns in fundamentals and mental discipline across the entire team. That's what you work on in spring and fall camp, and that responsibility falls squarely on the HC.
I've been calling for Moffit's head for ten years. Every linemen we send to the NFL gets laughed at in their weight room.
