Administration Blocks Texas Voter ID Law Administration blocks Texas voter ID law - CNN.com Are there any existing laws that can be enforced to prevent illegal immigrants from voting? We all know what this is about but how can anyone defend someone walking up and voting without having to prove that have the right to vote?
Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is one of the most egregious violations of states' rights to be handed down by Congress. The Constitution is supposed to prevent the Federal government from playing favorites amongst the states, but this law requires all states "with a history of racial bias in elections" to acquire Federal approval of changes made to voting laws, districts, etc. This means any Southern state is marked with this scarlet letter for perpetuity. It also guarantees the Democratic party at least one district in every Southern state.
Yet another reason that a secure National ID card is inevitable. It already exists, but is not yet mandatory. The borders must be secure, travel hassles must be streamlined, and illegal aliens must inhibited from working, receiving benefits, or voting. What do you know, martin . . . a tribal sovereignty issue!
It would take the trifecta: a Republican president, congress, and conservative Supreme Court for a voter reform such as this to pass. The argument stops at the fact that such a measure would limit Democrat votes.

We had a thread on this some time back, and I was against it. It just feels like a Big Brother issue....given the avenue to grab more and more control of our lives, the fed gummint will surely take it (regardless of the party in control). All the same, I don't know how people can function in America without some kind of official ID. I live in a small, everyone-knows-everyone town and am somewhat of a public figure here to boot, yet I get carded for using a credit card several times a week. Don't know how people function without ID in a huge, anonymous city like Houston, for example. + a gazillion
15 years ago I would have said the same thing. Big Brother . . . privacy issues. But now times have changed. Just watch NCIS. We can already be tracked in real time by our cellphones, our credit and ATM cards, our flight and hotel reservations, and our on-line purchases . . . even where we browse. A couple of million public cameras with face recognition software are everywhere we go. We have no privacy from law enforcement (or from Google, Inc), that ship has sailed long ago. What is now important is to be sure that the government can readily and confidently identify you so that you can be quickly on your way and they can focus on the terrorists, illegals, criminals, and other human detritus that washes through our system. Fraud and identity theft are rampant in the electronic era. It is increasingly important that proper identity documents become widely used and utilize the latest in anti-counterfeiting technology. Many countries, as in Europe, don't require national ID cards because almost everyone has passport. Travel to other countries is far more frequent than in the US where many citizens can live an entire life without leaving the US. Many other countries require national ID's or identity papers. Our lack of of one is allowing us to be exploited.
