Well, we pretty much have that with soccer these days. Basketball, not so much, but sometimes. Baseball yes, but then the Major League teams run the risk of getting embarrassed by Hispanic teams whose team salary is less than the lowest paid player on the American team. The problem is that American football just isn't big enough in other countries around here, nor is the competition anywhere close to what it is in the U.S.
I understand the reasoning for wanting to expand into new markets, but I agree that this idea is awful. When the Saints make it to the Super Bowl, I don't want to fly to Europe to see them. Not to mention the security concerns tiga mentions. Not only that, but American football is not like baseball or basketball. More than likely, it will only be viewed like we view soccer and only watched by a handful of diehards and purists. I don't think it will ever catch on as an international sport. As Goddell mentions though, this is simply an idea being tossed around internally. I'm pretty sure the NFL will conduct marketing survery or analysis and if it turns out to be viable, they'll proceed. If not, they won't.
It's going to happen. The NFL is a business looking to expand its market share and doing something like that will increase its share. I'm just curious why they haven't mentioned an Asian market. All three major sports leagues are doing everything they can to expand into China and Japan.
I don't see it. Maybe a regular season game, but not the Super Bowl. Saying that though, you have to realize that I've been wrong once or twice before, so take what you read witrh a grain of salt. :hihi:
Remember, these are the same people who threatened to sue a church for having a super bowl party. Anything is possible. But if it is more profitable to have the game out of the U.S. and they figure this out, will we ever have another Super Bowl in the U.S. How will they decide when to have it here and when to outsource it.
They can't run their business without us. Anyways, guess we will see how well the Dolphins-Giants do in London this year. It should give us a decent idea of how marketable the NFL is. I think they could succeed with one big game overseas, but the backlash would be too much. I could see only MLB doing something this dumb.
The money is here, though. I honestly don't see the NFL making more money off the Super Bowl overseas than here. How successful is NFL Europa? The only teams are in Germany, with one in Amsterdam. Teams from the other countries folded.
this is rediculous and would greatly demenish my interest. if i had to go overseas to witness the first saints superbowl, im sure id get throwed out.
