LSU already has 8 recruits committing verbally. You figure LSU could easily pick up anywhere from 3 to 6 more kids after the summer camps are over. That would put LSU with as much as 12 verbals by summer's end. LSU probably will only recruit 18-20 at the most. That will make fall recruiting interesting. I predict we end up with a very similiar class as USC had last year with a half dozen or so 5 star players.

USC had a very very rare recruiting class that comes around about as often as Hailey's(sp) Comet. It is not very probale that LSU will pull off a similar feat, however LSU is on pace to have a very very good class. Not many #1 recruiting classes will be able to equal the class that USC assembled last year, but you still have to turn them from division I prospects into division I players and thats where I think we have a definite advantage. All Saban has to do is continue to have recruiting success similar to what he has had the past couple of years and the sky is the limit. :thumb: :hihi: :thumb: :hihi: :thumb: :hihi: :thumb:

You're right Twisted, a class like USC's comes around only once every few Miami recruiting seasons!!!

Seriously though, just from the committments we have on board already I'm not looking at us being able to tough the ranking of a class like USC pulled in, all of their guys were pretty much national recruits that were ranked incredibly high altogether. But then again, we haven't seen exactly how high our commitments will be rated. We'll see.

The talent sitting on the bench at LSU will put off many high-school All-Americans, who want to play instantly. LSU only has room under the 85 limit to sign 18-20 players next year. Nick is going to have to save some offers for next winter, when most of the blue-chippers sign.

I wouldn't be so sure about that only because they play in such a weak conference. Also, his assistants and great athletes are not likely to stop making him look good.

I agree that recruiting is only half the battle as I said in my post ,however sayng that the NFL exposed Carroll as a goof and that he will not have success at the NCAA level is a reach at best. As CParso said USC is in a very weak conference plus a coach named Spurrier was laughed out of the NFL but no one doubts his abilty at the NCAA level. Cry baby Carroll is a good recruiter that has sorrounded himself with good assistants, Chow for one, and he should continue to have success even though there should be an asteric next to his accomplishments because it is done against such weak opponents. There are many qualities a coach needs to possess in order to have their program reach the top and stay there over the long haul thus becoming a great coach:

    1. Talent evaluator and ability to recruit them
    2. Assist. Coach evaluator and the ability to let them do their job.
    3. Manager of the program--Ability to manage the entire program and have people do the right things without micro-managing it.
    4. Ability to put players in positions where they will have the most impact.
    5. Ability to instill in players the great work ehtics needed to compete with the best and the ability to have the players play with confidence.
    6. Game planning, they won't always have the perfect plan but do on most occasions. they need to have the ability to know what situations their players will thrive in as well as how to attack & defend the other team.

Carroll and Saban are cut from much of the same cloth, as well as Stoops. They were all DC's who were innovative in their approach, put their players in positions where they could be successful and insituted great game plans. To say Carroll will not be a great head coach is ignoring the evidence of what he has done already in college ball and also ignoring what he accomplished as an assistant on the NFL level. He like Saban devised some of the best defenses in NFL history.

To say Carroll is only successful at this time because of his assistants is actually a tribute to the man but isn't true. You can bet he has an incredible amount of influence on the defense just as Saban and Stoops do. He may not actually coach a position like Nick but I can assure you he does have one heck of a lot of imput in what USC does on defense. On offense he gives Chow pretty much free reign within the parameters of what they are trying to do against certain teams. They may want a little more ball control vs some teams, etc., but for the most part Chow is the man, just like Jimbo is at LSU.

In my opinion the most important thing a head coach can do besides have talented players is have good assistants. To knock him for that is stupid.

None of these 3 guys could be called great yet IMO because they haven't done it for a long enough period, which is the definition of greatness in the coaching ranks, and enduring, winning program such as Bowden and Paterno have had. But i would fathom to guess that all 3 will considered in that same light if they stay long enough.

It is a very nice post. The three programs are on the rise. The scary thing is that all three teams are still very young.

Since I'm a LSU fan, I would never trade Saban for the other two coaches. My personal opinion, coach Saban is more mature than the other two.

BTW, thank for a great post.

While I agree with you Red55 about some of the great recruits not wanting to come here because of all of the talent I also think that those guys will be offset my the sheer number of great players that will want to come here, just as has happened with all of the great programs, especially Miami. We will lose a few due to that but the majority of guys that like LSU the most will still come here.
