Let me get this straight. USC has one loss. It was to an unranked team that we beat head to head. We have one loss. It was a close defeat by the #1 team in the country. USC is ranked five spots ahead of us? Is it just me or does this make no sense at all?
I was thinking the same thing. But, as I stated somewhere else yesterday, I'm just shocked they didn't drop us from the top 10 altogether.
i didnt post anything last night cause i was too pissed. listening to espn on the way home yesterday morning, kincaid (i think it was) predicted this would happen and went on a rant on when it did, how stupid it would be. for the reasons pointed out. he basically said it would be nothing more than blowing petey. ok, so thats not the words he used, but should have.
It defies logic. The explanation I've read most often is that it depends a lot on when you lose. The Condoms lost in Week #3. That and it was a loss on the road.
You're right... and Stanford beat Washington 34-14 and LSU "only" beat the Huskies 23-14, so Stanford should be in the top ten.... and.... and..... and... Amusing stuff, though....
It makes all the sense. USC lost a few weeks ago and worked their way back up. LSU lost sat so they fall behind. Honestly I thought LSU would drop to 15 or so.
That may be the reason but it doesn't mean it "makes sense". At least if you consider the use of logic a key ingredient in something "making sense" Just because a team's loss is fresh in your memory is no indicator of how good they are. USC's loss does not seem as bad because it was a few weeks ago? Also, teams very rarely "work there way up" the rankings. They move up by default because teams ahead of them loss and fall. People talk about rankings as if they are a scale of measure. Example: "I think we are playing like a 12th ranked team right now." Rankings are relative to the other teams in the league. You can't say someone is a top 10 caliber team in a vacuum. We should be ranked 10th only if the 9 teams ahead of us are better. No matter if we have 0 losses or 4. Or if we lost last week or week one.
I think had LSU looked better in previous games, as well as in the UF game we would have barely dropped. Lets be honest here, that wasnt the best UF had to offer on O. If pushed they would have opened it up, they were conservative under the circumstances. Not at all taking anything away from the heart the D showed but thats the facts. As much as I hate to admit it USC should be ranked over LSU. Outside of the loss theyve looked more impressive. They also have the big win @ OSU which is much better than LSUs best win @UGA.
Now this is an argument I can buy. While I do not agree with it because I don't think OSU is better than UGA, I can still see the point. It think that this however is more compelling: USC and our SOS has been comparable if not slightly tougher for us. We have a mutual opponent that we beat they lost to. The nature of our loss should incur the slightest negative impact possible The nature or our previous wins is reflected in our rankings in those weeks. Not to be held and applied latter.
