And lets say said minimum wage worker does pull himself up by the bootstraps and improves his lot. Who are you now hiring for the job? Another person you'll tell to pick himself up by his bootstraps? It sounds good in isolation, but there are not enough jobs for everyone to make more money for themselves. Even if everyone simultaneously decided to do something to better themselves, the job market wouldn't be able to support it.

The job market can't support it because of burdensome regulations and taxes. Every time there is some perceived problem in society, politicians jump to the rescue by blaming business and passing more regulations.

You say republicans wouldn't go for a flat tax without loopholes because they would lose their deductions.
Democrats will not because of their belief in a graduated tax. You have said before in the past that a graduated tax is fair and needed. If I have mistaken you with someone else I apologize.
If republicans won't go fora simple tax system with no deductions and democrats must have a graduated tax system , then what's the answer?
I have said before that a tax code with one flat rate with no deductions would be better than what we have. I was told it would amount to a devestating raise in taxes that would ruin America. I don't think that millionares should be paying less than a person making 100k. I also don't think that half of all Americans should pay nothing. A set percentage that everyone pays on income with no deductions at all is the fairest way to go about it. Why would democrats ever scratch a graduated tax system when it appeals to their sense of social justice and spreading the wealth? Tax rates could be lower for everyone with fewer loopholes and deductions.

Compromise. You can flatten a progressive tax system by half and still leave some tiers. It still requires removing tax havens. Try that system a while and see if it works. The rich would get a lower rate in return for loss of unfair tax havens. The poor would still get a lower rate than the rich, but would have to pay something. If everybody got comfortable with that, the a true flat tax might be passable.

At one time I thought you said that the lower middle class and working poor
( <50k) shouldn't pay taxes. You have come around to saying everyone should have skin in the game. Are us conservatives rubbing off on you? I too agree that all income should be taxed the same , no matter if a payroll income or investment income. You have caused me to rethink some of the issues also. Some but not all.

I have never said that. I said that today a working couple making less than 50K with two children pay no taxes now because of child credits and deductions. Under a flat tax they would have to pay the flat rate, albeit lower than todays rate.

No, you are just perceiving that I am a moderate and not a liberal. There are lots of folks to the left of my positions.
