This worries me. Both Willie Parker and Hines Ward have come out publicly with some statements that imply that the season is over. Parker questioned the passion on this team, saying that the Steelers already got what they wanted and that there is nothing to play for. Ward said that the Steelers might as well start auditioning for next season. Hopefully this doesn't become some kind of reverse psychology that gets this team going, with the Saints being their first victim. Kinda strange coming from a team that won it's last 8 games of the season last year.
I'm not buying into that either especially from someone as respected as Hines Ward. But truth is they are playing bad football right now.
I think a lot of fans, non-fans, pundits, media, etc are looking to get on board with the Saints after beating a good Steeler team on the road this weekend. If you look at the road wins for the Saints, they have come against Cleveland, Green Bay and Tampa Bay. Not exactly something to write home to momma about. This road win against the Steelers would make the Saints much more legit in many people's minds. And I can accept that. I just think we need to get Horn back. I think Cowher is way too smart to let the Saints throw for 314 yards this week without Horn present.
What's ironic is had the Cowher done the right thing and started Batch these past 2 weeks, the Steelers more than likely are 4-4 right now. Rothleisberger has single-handedly lost those last 2 games for them.
I agree, Big Ben is not the same. I read some steeler fan's blog and he says the word in steeltown is that he has "brain damage." I thought that was pretty funny.
its to be expected. with the offseason turmoil which carried into the regular season with roethlisberger (bike crash and appendix) added to your typical team hangover after a world championship it has the makings of a letdown season. LSU suffered the same thing in the '04 season under saban. A NC hangover pretty much the entire year. You arent as hungry and work just a little less and it bites you in the ass. Somehow belichick and brady (and weis and o' romeo) found a way to beat that disease even in today's free agency. Thats why the wins over the so-called cupcakes should never be taken for granted. If you dont come to play even against the lesser teams in the conference, you're going to lose. same way this week is a letdown game after an emotional win. Bama losing to Moo U makes an LSU upset much more likely cuz bama is gonna be much more focused while LSU will be less mentally prepared than last week. its human nature. Much easier to do something once than it is to maintain it.
Even Belichick's team suffered a similiar fate in 02. An 8-8 finish was not close to what was expected from a team that should have contended for another SB title. So it happens to the best of them. Although, I do remember a rash of injuries that year for Belichick and the boys, particularly on defense.
road wins in the NFL are close to impossible to come by on a regular basis. Dont read too much into the quality of teams as you saw even the bears lose to a bad team in the dolphins. Saints swept the bucs who had just beaten cinci and phili in b2b weeks. Much more impressive than anything Pitt has done this year. Saints validated themselves as a legit team last weekend. It would have been the opposite had they let that one slip away. (just for you: indians acquired second baseman barfield from the Pods for third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and rhp andrew brown. Bud Black to be named pods manager as well.)
(just for you: Padres really hard up for a 3B if they are giving up Barfield...this kid will be special...supposedly this pitcher is really good though....Bud Black....I guess they like being 84-78)
They should give up on the season. They were paper champions last year, that didn't exactly beat down an OK Seattle team, which followed a lackluster regular season. They got hot when it counted, but it couldn't carry over. Nevermind the fact that Roethlisberger is probably not a top 10 QB in the league. He played his Dilfer role well though, and that defense played over their heads. Especially in the AFC, you can't lose that fire and passion for week-to-week excellence. The other teams are simply too good. That makes what Indy has done THUS FAR all the more impressive. Personnel-wise, they're not as good as last year (and you can see that in the spreads of their victories.) However, there seems to be more confidence in their ability to WIN, not just put up flashy numbers. Disclaimer: I'm not a Colts fan, though I do like Dungy, Addai, and Sanders.
