Orgeron has never been a DC. His LSU Bio doesn't mention it. His Wiki page doesn't mention it. His Ole Miss bio doesn't mention it. I found no articles that mentioned it. At USC for two years he was "Defensive Coordinator" while Monte Kiffen held the title of "Assistant Head Coach". This is nothing more than a resume booster. Orgeron no more called the defensive plays and made the defensive game plan than I can flap my arms and fly. I'm an early fan of Dave Aranda. No DC in the country accomplishes more with less. Last season he was very interested in the job. I haven't seen anything about this year, but it's still pretty early.
Actually his LSU bio does mention it. "2010-12 Southern Cal (defensive coordinator/defensive line/recruiting coordinator, 2010-12; interim head coach, 2012)" http://www.lsusports.net/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209848513 I agree Aranda looks to be the best choice at this point.
better tell USC. Ed Orgeron, one of the most popular assistant coaches in USC history, is in his fourth year back at Troy as the recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach after returning to the Trojan staff in January of 2010. He also was the defensive coordinator in 2010 and 2011 and then the assistant head coach starting in 2012. It's his 10th overall season at USC. I've never heard that. I will ask. One of the reasons that Scott Cochrn didn't follow Smart to UGA was his time in the system. He'll be going into his tenth year in 2016 and IF I recall the numbers correctly he's looking at getting sixty something percent of his highest salary over his last four years: so, figure something like 65% of 600K per ... I'd have thought if you could buy a year or two that would have come up in the conversations when Kirby was after Scott and Saban countered. Again...don't know, will ask.
It's true, but not applicable. It's a year or two for people with at least 20 years in and buying to get to 25. IE: IF I had 20 years, I could buy two, retire after my 23rd with 25 technically on the books.
