"Teachers need to stop teaching to the test." Would a Vocational Ed. student taking a welding class NOT be expected to be taught how to run beads? Or should they expect to be taught carpentry? Uh, you teach that which prepares a student to pass the "test" that says they've mastered a high enough level to move on. What a dumbass. Then turns around and tells of the lady sitting with Michelle being trained specifically FOR job related skills needed and how we need more of this type of training...same thing. It's "teaching to the 'test'". I felt he used "I" WAY too much. Also felt like he had too many party-line specific comments. In other words, directly calling out opposition instead of being more discreet with his "message." I could be wrong on that though since I don't specifically recall the content of other SOTU Addresses. I've never been scared to where I felt I needed to listen as I did with this one. Wondering about others' take- good and/or bad. I'd love to hear SabanFan's reaction(s). :lol:
I gave up watching these things a long time ago. All they do is piss me off. I know enough about any of them before the SOTU to have to listen to their campaign speeches again.
Yeah, I didn't listen mainly because I can't stand that bastard and the fact that they do a standing O after just about every damn sentence. It is all a bunch of bullsh!t anyway. As for the teaching to the test stuff. Well what the hell else are you supposed to teach? When I was on the trail that was our mantra to the soldiers. "The stress is between you and the standard not you and the other recruits" We (drill sgts) would give them the tools and the training to pass (meet the standard) and they either did it or they did not. Pretty cut and dry. Sure some did it better than others but that is life. If you have 8 seconds to get your gas mask on it doesn't matter if you get it in 4 or in 7.9, only if you get it in 8.1.
All Obama did was show that he is back in campaigning mode. He ran as a centrist in 2008, his speech showed that he will ride that horse again.

You know good and well that he's talking about "No Child" here. Teachers all over the countryhave complained that they have to spend their entire curriculum on preparing students for the test that have become so important for funding reasons. A lot of education gets left by the wayside.
the sotu is nothing more than a big, nationally televised, campaign commercial. i dont have the patience to sit through one like i used to.
