The 2007 season is finished and in the record books.

This issue is about the FUTURE!

It has always been a contention in a NC championship run that if you, "lose early," you are still in the hunt.

Personally, I'm tired of split titles and controversy.
No more AP popularity or "media hype" championship titles.
    No more disputed championships.

With a playoff system, the winner IS the National Champion in head to head competition just like in any other sport within the NCAA realm.

Of course they should be in, they met the criteria that was well established beforehand. Had they lost one more game any time during the season, the Vikings, not the Giants, would have made the playoffs. It would not have been left up to voters or a computer to figure out, it was who wins the most games, period. So the Giants entry into the playoffs was a reward for their full season of work, not just because they got hot at the end. The basic problem with the BCS system as it is now is that there is still too much room for argument. Telling Georgia that they can't play in the BCS because they didn't even win their conference makes perfect sense, until you consider that Oklahoma made it without winning the Big 12 back in '03. There's no rule that addresses the issue one way or another. Some clear-cut eligibility rules would eliminate much of the arguing (though I still want to see a playoff).

I can't really blame anyone from the state of Georgia wanting a playoff. UGA has had at least two different teams, in the last 7 years, that was good enough to win the national title but never got the chance cause the chips didn't fall their way. With a playoff, who knows, UGA might be sitting pretty with a couple of national titles this decade. Coulda...woulda...shoulda...

The reality is that a playoff is not going to answer the question of who is the best – unless you completely rearrange the D1 schedule. You are going to have to pretty much do away with conference divisions and non conference games. Otherwise you are always going to leave someone out. Hell, to make it work you might even have to realign the conferences and frankly that wouldn’t be very smart on the part of the conferences.

This year’s Georgia team would be left out anyway unless you go very deep in Division I for participants. I understand they were ranked high in the polls but they are not a reason to start considering a playoff unless you include the second place teams from the PAC 12 and the Big 10 (or whatever they are now), the third and fourth place teams from the Big 12, the ACC and the Big East. If you have a playoff you need to remember:

    • You pretty much have to take the conference champions (seven or more positions).
    • Even if you decide to take the division winners in each conference that have divisions your going to be nine or ten teams and still not have Georgia.
    • If you just go by polls, and you put Georgia in, which conference champion or divisional champion are you going to leave out?
What we have now has worked very well for LSU and I’ll just stick with it until someone proposes something that might actually have a chance of working and not leaving someone out.

All the reasons on this thread is why I can't decide what is the best solution. It's one of the biggest Pandora Boxes I've ever seen. It just goes on and on and on. The system we have now works pretty well. All the criticism comes from it not being perfect. I like the 65 team March Madness, but of course that would not work for college football.

I think when you look at Georgia and how well they recruit and how good they are year after year points out the element of luck that is in any team winning a BCSNC. USC who has the best athletes every year still has only 1 Crystal Ball, and they may have to return that. LSU is the only school that has won 2. I see the SEC winning most of the championships over the next 6 years until the other conferences catch up to the SEC. Who will win from the SEC is anyones guess after the long SEC schedule and injuries inflicted on a team.
