Georgia House calls for playoff system

House lawmakers pass resolution, send it to Senate

Does the state of Georgia not have any more serious problems then this? I thought they were in a severe drought and may run out of water by this coming summer. I would only expect this type of government vote from Alabama. Do they really think they got screwed after getting blown out by Tennessee? Maybe they are having a melt down because there are so many SEC teams who have won BCS championships and they have NONE.

Any thoughts as to why they did this?

I hope the playoff thing never happens, but if it does, I have the perfect vision for poetic justice of the very 1st season it exists:

UGA goes unbeaten in reg season, wins SEC CG (if it still exists), and is undisputed #1 going into the playoffs. Beats some chump in round 1, then loses their next game. Then they could whine that "under the old way, we would be champs:bncry::cuss::bncry:"

Orrrr, maybe they just create a playoff in GA...UGA, Tech, GA Southern, Valdosta St...

Honestly, I wouldn't mind having a playoff system of some form in place but I really think the GA legislature is giving themselves a little too much credit here. This is not an issue to be decided by state govt.

So, the NCAA doesn't go along - what is their next step?
Cut funding for UGA, GT and other state schools if they don't leave the NCAA?

Hey, maybe we should start contributing to re-elect some of the folks.

So are you saying that anybody can beat anybody else on any given day? Oh my gosh, somebody better tell Georgia. Of course they ran all over Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl and they deserve to be National champs!:rofl::rofl:

I'm tired of listening to all the BIG PreTENder fans and Notre Dame fans continually claim that they are, "SMARTER," because they have an easier road to a BCS title game.

And then there are the commentators who either don't have a clue or are politically/money motivated to say anything to anybody. Many of these people vote without any sense of an ethical conviction whatsoever.

The current system is manipulated by politics and money.
It is about time that the NCAA cleans house on this bogus system within Divison 1A football.

I am completely divided on a playoff vs Bowl/Poll winner. What we have is this.

Do we award the NC to a team for their complete season or how they end up the season. Today's Super Bowl is a prime example of what we are discussing in college football. The wild card NY Giants who barely made it into the playoffs playing against the undefeated NE Patriots. Should NY, who did not win their division be allowed in the playoffs??? The Giants are hot right now. If Brady goes down with a personal foul to the head and can't play and say NE loses there will be debates forever about who had the best team this year? Now if the Giants don't get in the playoffs since they did not win their division we might be watching Green Bay against NE.

So this is the issue, and my friends, this is not Basketball where you play 30 games in a season. Do you allow a hot team like Georgia that might win it all or do you only keep the conference winners in the hunt?

The system worked for LSU this year but did not work for LSU last year. It's either, or, neither one is perfect.

And I still don't know which would be better. But I do know this. I love the tradition of the Bowls and I'm happy with the slow evolution of a plus 1 and keep the integrity of the Bowl system. I just DO NOT want any non conference winners in the hunt.

And one more thing on the bowls, get rid of at least 6 or 7 of them. Having empty stadiums for terrible teams to play a bowl game is a joke.

Here in Atlanta, the prevailing thought is that the state of Georgia and the city of Atlanta, in particular, would benefit financially from the impact of playing a significant role in such a playoff ....... just as they have benefitted by hosting the regionals for Final Four events.

The revenue generated is enormous and IMO, Atlanta knows it is in better position than some of the traditional Bowl venues to take advantage of the growth.

TenTexLa ..... I hear you. If they don't do something to reduce the obvious, subjective bias, then the validity of a playoff format won't really solve anything.

For example, take the coaches poll. It shouldn't even be a part of the ranking system because coaches (or their surrogates that complete their ballot forms) are significantly influenced by the television media that reports on games. Instead, increase the weight of the computer polls to balance the traditional human poll. Perhaps consider the Masters Poll as a substitute for the AP and Coaches poll altogether.

That would give you 50% computer, and 50% full-time Masters Coaches to issue the weekly rankings, with the first poll of the season being generated after the week-6 games are completed. Better yet, use a selection committee to validate the final polls based on specific criteria such as the one you suggested (either the best team at the time, or the best team for the whole season)

The BCS-school Presidents don't want the NCAA involved because then they would dilute the revenues by and dillute the level of competition (the product). So that means the only way to have a playoff is to have an independent governing body like the BCS. I don't like it , because I don't believe that Media and big-city governments should be allowed to infuence the process, but that's the way it is and that's the way it's going to be for the forseeable future. Baby steps ..... baby steps .....
