I never use any sport other than football, baseball and basketball to count national championships. Using track and field seems a bit like desperately overreaching. Golf is a great sport but not a good spectator sport so even though I'd like to count this years golf title I won't. Question: If stock car racing were an NCAA sport would the league championship race be at Talledega, Atlanta, Daytona or Bristol? Somehow I think Talledega.
All sports is all sports. Bama is all football. The numbers are official. There are no NCAA championships in Division I football.
I hate to be second to Bama in anything but on a scale of how people feel about it football is king. I would assign a value rating of 10 to football, 9 to basketball, 8 to baseball and 1 to all other sports. Compare how you felt late evening January 9, 2012, to how you felt when the women't softball team lost in the WCWS. Soul crushing agony to "Oh, well, nice try. Wish they would have won." How much elation did you feel when LSU won those track titles. "Well, that's good. When does football season start."
When they built the entrance to the North end zone along with "The Zone," they ended up tearing down three frats houses that were along University Blvd. That left roughly an acre of open land leading into the stadium. With the addition and remodel, that turned that area into ... geez, what's the word I'm looking for ... a memorial park, of sorts? Every team that has won an SEC championship in football has something there just like every NC winner and the coaches of those teams. No, the other coaches weren't coaching at that point. I don't know when the statue of Coach Bryant was put up in Birmingham outside of Legion Field. I'd have to look. The construction of all of this started at the end of the 2004 season. That's a significant date because it marked the end of games being played in Birmingham. One, coincided with the other ... school moved into a new era, per se. It's a lot like the Champions Plaza outside the baseball stadium. Its structure serves as the foundation for the seating area out in right field which is also new. (Pretty cool area...coolers allowed, so you can have your favorite beverage while watching some college baseball.) There are several structures and "monuments" around campus. Personally, the one I find the most interesting is around Denny Chimes where the captains of the football teams from each year are recognized. Some really big names in college football history can be found there.
Does TigerTap have your password? You're calling me sensitive? Some serious envy creeping through here, amigo. We can certainly go with "No NCAA Championships in football." Care to discuss SEC championships?
