File it under "things to do on a Saturday when the Tigers aren't playing," but my husband convinced me to go up to Denton and catch the UNT/Tulsa game. The last time we'd gone to a game up there was in 2000, and one could park 50 yards from the stadium five minutes before game time then. There is obviously more excitement around UNT football these days because we had to park a good mile from the stadium. But I digress... The final score was 56-25, but that doesn't do justice to how BAD North Texas is. They have some freshmen who will probably make them competitive, at some point, in the Sun Belt, but they can't challenge LSU...or Tulsa. In fact, the only bright spots for them was their kicking game. It was actually quite good--better than LSU's. Also, #5, Lance Dunbar, is a decent runner, and young Riley Dodge (#11 and son of head coach Todd Dodge) had a few really good plays. Other than that, there was little about which UNT fans could be excited. But we happened to be seated near what can only be described as UNT's #1 fan (or ONLY fan?) He was passionate as all get-out, and I had to respect him. He was also pretty funny, so I took out my checkbook and started writing some of his gems down on the back of a deposit slip. The best of them are as follows: "At least we're getting 'em to 3rd down before they get a 1st..." "Well, that TD drive took longer than a minute, so..." When the fans were lethargic, which was always, "Please support our team. I'm sensing a lot of negativity. We need positivity." "That's two first downs--what we call a sustained drive." "The red shirt is OFF!" (re: Riley Dodge's nice reverse that brought them down to the 8.) Again, trying to rally the fans, " This is a FOOTBALL game, people! Not the library or Starbucks." He said that exact same thing at least three times. Eventually, he made it over to talk to us--because he appeared to be trying to meet everyone within earshot. I told him I was scouting for LSU, and he proceeded to tell me that his "worst away game experience EVER was at LSU, with those drunk (he whispered this word) fans." Again...things to do on a Saturday when the Tigers aren't playing.
