I've been a fan of his since he was at Florida, mostly because of what tirk just wrote,.. Hope his health is ok.
The linked article from 2013 says the HBC & Lynn Swan are relatively new members. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/members-295227-club-national.html
Don't know about the others but no way Dantonio goes to South Carolina. If it was USCw I could see him there Here are some possible candidates to replace the Head Ball Coach: Jeff Brohm, WKU The former Louisville quarterback is in year 2 as Western Kentucky's head coach. If the goal is to hire a coach who can develop quarterbacks and put some juice into the offense, the 44-year-old Brohm could be that guy. Matt Campbell, Toledo Campbell turns 36 in November, but is already in his fourth full season as the Rockets coach. He is 31-13 with the Rockets and at 5-0 he appears headed to his best season yet. An Ohio guy who played defensive line at Division III power Mount Union, he was offensive coordinator at Toledo before being promoted in 2011. Justin Fuente, Memphis Fuente took over a dead program, and in Year 3 at Memphis, he is halfway to his second consecutive 10-win season. The 39-year-old from Oklahoma has already established himself as a program builder. Kirby Smart, Alabama defensive coordinator Unless Smart is just going to wait for Nick Saban to retire and hope he gets promoted, it is probably time for the 39-year-old to go be a head coach somewhere, prove himself, and then maybe come back when Saban does call it a career. Power Five schools aren't hiring many first-time head coaches and defensive coordinators aren't very popular these days, either. But if you buy Smart, you're hoping he comes with Saban's process. Matt Wells, Utah State Another Oklahoman, the 42-year-old former Utah State quarterback is not an obvious fit moving to the Southeastern Conference. He is 22-11 in two-plus seasons with the Aggies and is headed for a big job at some point so why not in the SEC? Mark Dantonio, Michigan State Dantonio went to South Carolina so people will ask if he would be interested. Highly unlikely.
Add him to the list. I don't think it's all that attractive of a job. Play in the brutal SEC in a state with a small recruiting base. Spurrier made it work because he knows every high school coach in Florida and Georgia. A couple of years ago I looked at their roster and almost half of their players were from Georgia.
I am starting to think the same...Sounds like he was being pushed out and they wanted him to finish the season and he said "Fuck you".
Spurrier's 15 greatest trash talking quotes ON FLORIDA STATE: 1.”You know what FSU stands for, don’t you? Free Shoes University.” 2. When Jadeveon Clowney got a speeding ticket: “I didn’t know Jadeveon’s car that could go that fast. He doesn’t have a pretty car like those FSU guys used to drive.” ON GEORGIA: 3. “I don’t know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended.” 4. “Why is it that during recruiting season they sign all the great players, but when it comes time to play the game, we have all the great players? I don’t understand that. What happens to them?” ON DABO SWINNEY: 5. Swinney said on Spurrier: “He’s from Pluto, and I’m from Mars.”Spurrier said back: “Dabo probably thinks there’s only, what, nine planets out there? I think I read where Pluto may not be considered one now.” 6. On a mis-attributed quote that Swinney believed Spurrier said: “I said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do? I didn’t say it.’ Smart people don’t believe everything they read, and they don’t believe hearsay. … I guess Dabo believed it.” ON AUBURN: 7. On a fire at the Auburn library that destroyed 20 books: “The real tragedy was that 15 hadn’t been colored yet.” ON TENNESSEE: 8. “Will be the 14th time I’ve coached in Neyland Stadium. … I’ve coached there more than some of their head coaches.” 9. “In Knoxville they’re still doing cartwheels because they went 7-6 and won a bowl.” 10. When asked about Tennessee’s failure to make the Sugar Bowl while he was at Florida: “You can’t spell Citrus without U-T.” ON PEYTON MANNING: 11. “I know why Peyton came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl.” ON ALABAMA: 12. “In 12 years at Florida, I don’t think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama … Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours.” ON HIS OWN OFFENSIVE LINE IN 2006: 13. “Well, we can’t trade ‘em. So I guess we have to coach ‘em.” ON FATHER TIME: 14. “People ask me why are you still coaching? I forgot to get fired and I’m not going to cheat.” 15. “The Pope is 77 years old and he’s in charge of a billion people. All I have to do is put 11 on the field.”
When you consider his success during his playing days and his success at coaching two different SEC teams - who has been more important to SEC football? Bear never won a Heisman. 3 . . . .2 . . . .1 BOOM Gump explosion!!!
