When Spurrier's Gators returned to Baton Rouge in '99 following our win over their #1 ranked team in '97, he complained about the LSU fans being too crazy (or something) before and after the '97 game. I was a student at the time and wrote a letter that was published in The Reveille. My general point to be made was that LSU fans are not that much different than Florida (or any other big SEC program) in that most of the fans are good people that are respectful to opponents but there are always a few bad apples. I pretty much hated Spurrier back then but don't now. Maybe because he's been somewhat irrelevant for over a decade.
I just watched Spurrier's press conference. And although I still have a dislike for him from his days as the Gators HBC and to a lesser degree as the USCe HBC, I gained a degree of respect for him today and the decision he made. I give him credit for recognizing the time was right to step aside and turn over the reins to someone else.
I saw the press conference and thought he came off LIKE A COWARD. He very specifically says he is not retiring, he's resigning. He said if he was still winning he could keep going for years but because they're losing its time for him to walk away. Old Ball Coach? More like NO BALLS Coach. When the news broke yesterday and it sounded like he was retiring and it seemed like he was sick then I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and wish him well. But after that conference, he just seems like an old selfish prick. Good riddance.
I remember the ass whippings he put on us well. Yes they hurt but you know he kept substitutes in after the game was decided. He just kept running his offense with second and third stringers. It was up to us to stop him not him. btw how many of you complain when Les doesn't give the subs a chance to execute the O. What I admire most about him is his honesty. He called himself out as often as his players. A close second is his humor. The quotes so many have cited above are all gems. My only regret is that we didn't hire him when we had the chance.
I've always had a beef with coaches who put in the second and third stringers in a blowout and then just kept handing off in a vanilla offense. How are the backups supposed to get real game experience in running the offense if they don't run the offense?
LSU fans would have heart attacks if he was the head coach here. He has only had 3 seasons since the 90's where he hasn't played musical chairs with his QB.
If it was Les and he was losing regularly and he felt he was not improving the program and did the same as Spurrier I would respect it. Especially if his heart wasn't in it.
I think anyone that paid attention could see it wasn't fun for the OBC for a few years now. I don't like it but I get it and I still like him.
My only objection is to him quitting at mid-season. Losing's no fun? The losing is at least in part due to your own failures as a coach. The kids you recruited are still playing....do right by them and finish out the season. Then retire/resign/quit with dignity.
