Is that to push the third? I've seen this before. Some have to be pushed, like I said with Porter and Pocic. Among other players.

Side note: During the summer of 2007, he was an intern under Cam Cameron, who at the time was the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers. George worked with all the quarterbacks at camp including a young standout named Philip Rivers.

"I thought one of the biggest gets in the country last year was Brandon Harris,” Whitfield said.

Whitfield, who runs Whitfield Athletix, a quarterback academy in San Diego, is widely considered one of the top private quarterback trainers in the country. And with a list of former clients that include Cam Newton and Andrew Luck, and now Johnny Manziel, Whitfield’s word is considered gold in the world of up-and-coming quarterback prospects.

After working with Harris at Elite 11 camps during his high school days, Whitfield is confident that the nation’s No. 3 dual-threat quarterback has the tools to make early impact at the college level.

"There isn’t a quarterback in this class with his arm talent,” Whitfield said. "You can print that and write that. There isn’t one kid. He will develop and he will get bigger.

"He reminds me of (Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston). Jameis was only 6-foot-2 and 190-pounds when he was at Elite 11 at that same age.

"The ability to distribute the ball out there is huge. The defense has to guard the width and depth of the field at all times. That’s why the Packers are nasty when they get rolling and running. Having that quarterback that wears you out up the sidelines, down the seams and over the top, that’s an incredible advantage, especially for such a youngster.”

With summer and fall workouts ahead, it remains unclear as to the distance separating Harris and Jennings in the mind of Cameron and the staff. No matter the outcome next fall, Whitfield said Harris’ future is bright well beyond who trots into the huddle in the season opener against Wisconsin.

"He’s going to be playing after college,” Whitfield said. "He’s smart. He’s wide-eyed. He cares.”

And that trend - sending names like Mettenberger and Harris off to play on Sundays - is something Whitfield feels will become a constant for LSU, in large part because of the arrival of Cameron.

"When you go back to these guys coming out, they say ‘he has to catch up to the NFL game’ or ‘his system is so simple’,” Whitfield said. "Not any kid that comes out of this program. They will already be acclimated to all the NFL structure, system and regimen. I’m not just talking X’s and O’s, but how to be a professional and how to practice like one.

"When your mentor and your guy that you spend all day with has built and grown Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers, then Joe Flacco. Now you get a chance to partake in this?”

The stamp of approval from a quarterback guru is always welcomed, but grabbing Whitfield’s attention - the attention of a coach who spends countless hours with some of the nation’s top high school quarterbacks each year - could pay off to much more.

"Jump on it,” Whitfield responded when asked what he would tell his young quarterbacks if they received an offer from Cameron and LSU.

"This, to me, is one of the top destination spots now,” he said. "If I am a big-time high school quarterback with aspirations of playing in the NFL, and I want to win in college, this is one of those places on one hand now that you are going to find, and they will be for some time.

"The recruiting is going to shut it down. Most of the time, your big golden boys will float to Michigan or Southern California or Stanford. The bayou, that’s going to be interesting. You have all these big dudes blocking for you and all these jack rabbits in the huddle running. Then you have a defense like that?"

LSU QB Harris to train in California in May

LSU quarterback Brandon Harris graded himself a ‘D’ for his performance in the LSU spring game.

He’ll head west next month to improve.

Harris, the freshman from Bossier City, will spend the entire month of May in California working out with former LSU quarterback Craig Nall and quarterback guru George Whitfield.

Harris will spend about a week with Whitfield, a former signal-caller who runs a quarterback training academy in San Diego.

He’s trained several noted passers, including current Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck and former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. Former Missouri quarterback James Franklin trained with Whitefield before his senior season last summer.

Already, Harris has developed in his three months in Baton Rouge with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron overseeing his progress.

Harris has gained about 10 pounds since arriving and will be expected to gain a few more before fall camp. He sits around 195 pounds.

Cameron calls Harris “an outstanding young talent.” The young quarterback was hard on himself for a spring-game performance that had fans in a tizzy. Harris seemed to have at least leveled himself with Anthony Jennings in the battle for the starting job.

He finished 11-for-28 for 195 yards and three passing touchdowns. He had 77 yards rushing with a score, numbers that brewed excitement in the LSU football community.

Harris didn’t know what all of the fuss was about.

“Brandon said to me, ‘Coach, I’ve never seen so many people excited about the worst game I’ve ever played,’” Cameron said at LSU’s pro day last week.

A little breakdown on the Spring Game receiving:

3 of the RB's caught 6 passes for 68 yds and 1 Td.
3 of the WR's caught 7 passes for 200 yds and 2 Tds.
5 TE's caught 8 passes for 131 yds and 1 Td.

Right now, LSU is loaded at the TE position, things should change in the Fall.

Lots of vanilla on both sides of the ball.

WR's -28.6
TE's -16.4
RB's -11.3

Not bad, for a total, 19 yds per reception.
