Fish I was at the game and I am with you along with Shep! QB's maybe #12 JJ looks the same power running and Mingo will be insane along with PP #7 ! about what I thought except the power running was better than I thought it would be
I went in worried about the QB situation and the O-Line. I came out worried about the DL, and thinking that Jarrett Lee would be the better starter. As for the D-Line, Nevis did not play.........Aghayere either!!!! I hope that Pep Levingston and Josh Downs can put on at least 20 pounds over the summer, and solidify the DT position. We need size....in the middle!!!! LB's could use a little more weight gain as well....too small right now. O-line looked so much better when they did not have to play a zone blocking assignments all game long. Now if they could start to pull the guards more, and get back to the LSU running games of the past.
Bandit I agree except I think OL will be better. Running game and Big D I would go with Lee at QB . His touch and feel for the game seems to be better than JJ. Everyone will talk about the pick 6 again and that is hard to explain but I just like the way he moves and looks down the field. JJ seems to be a broken record and no feel for the deep ball at all. just me
On the Lee pick6, I watched the replay, and the o-line let him down bad. The RG #74 (Williford)should have at least chipped the DT #50 (Davenport), and he didn't. 74 released and went downfield to block and 50 was in Lee's face quick. The left tackle, #76 (Faulk) wiffed on Sam Mongomery (99) and Sam was in JL face quickly also. JL had to get rid of it, and he threw a bad pass, lofted high in the middle of the field. He led Randle too much, ball too high, and Loston made a good play and took it. A lot went wrong on that play. Announcers said you have to throw that pass and hit the guy on the numbers, it has to be very accurate. Matt Flynn used to throw that pass very well. I saw more progress in JL play than JJ. Garrett at QB did not wow anyone. Lot of talented athletes, lot of speed. Like many others, concerned about the d-line. Mingo is fast, but I don't see a 212 lb. DE in the SEC (what the announcers said). My player of the game, Ford. I guess that's good because the run blocking by the purple team must have been good.
I preface this by saying I am one of your biggest fans, when it comes to posters on this site. However, I'm simply not sure what you were watching today. JJ overthrew EVERY deep ball he attempted...and they weren't near ANYONE'S cast. I did see the drop by Randle, and it was "catchable"...but by no means was it a good throw. He simply looked awful...all day. I venture to say that...knowing they can't hit me...I could complete those simple screens and outs "most of the time"...and I'm what you'd call washed up. Nevermind...you were talking about Lee. But take everything I said and apply it to JJ...cause that's who I was talking about.
And I'm not as concerned about the defense as much as most seem to be. A couple of guys that will be starters didn't play...and as much as people seem to hate "3rd and Chavis", if they can hold teams to FGs, we should be OK. FWIW, it drives me crazy sometimes, but it's pretty effective in the long run.
I felt like Lee looked solid, the pick was not good but it was just an awful looking play from the start, he shouldn't have thrown it. With that said, he looked very calm the whole game and to me if Mingo wouldn't have been in his face on just about every pass play he could have had a great game. Jefferson looks like he has a case of the Lee-shellshocked look, just completely lost. I am a little biased because I have always thought Lee had much better throwing potential but has suffered from some terrible decision making and some shell shock moments from hell. I feel like Crowton has let all the QBs down and I think any QB you would have put in there over the last 2 years would have struggled. I like what I saw from Crowton and some of what I have been complaining about appears to have been changed....an RB that can stay in the game on any play and no substitution for specific plays. Good start. Overall, I felt a coming out of an identity with the team especially with Ridley and Ford. You can say whatever you want about Lee, but you can't call him gutless. To me he has probably been through more than any college player has, at least one that I can remember off-hand. Whether or not he is a bad or great player, I applaud him for sticking with the team. I can't say Jefferson isn't and hasn't played hard either, both kids are trying their best.
I will not bash JJ but I saw him do the thing that bugs me the most about him other than no touch at all on the deep ball. He sits for 3 seconds reading in the pocket he sees nothing and moves back and drifts to his right. Then full run to the right with nothing but sideline. I have never seen him move forward and look to the center or left of the field at this moment. oh well just a spring game and JJ would be my starter if I had to pick one today.
