Lost in the TF crash time was the spring game. Those who attended, how about some post game thoughts? What impressed you; what did not?
I was there and several things caught my eye: Mettenberger's moxy and overall QB potential. No, he wasn't lights out but he looks for his 2nd and 3rd options. He's aggressive and looks to make a play, and for me.... I'm excited. Depth at D-Line: We've got at least 4 DTs and 5 DEs that can and will play, and play well. Depth at RB: Michael Ford didn't play in the Spring Game but we still had 2 RBs on each sqaud. This is one of our best position groups. Ware (dropped some weight and looks quicker), Hilliard, Blue, Ford and the Freshman Jeremy Hill all look good. Veteran, Stout O-Line: There are at least 6 guys that look SEC ready: Faulk, Hurst, Lonergan, Williford, Josh D, and La'el Collins. Collins is the only one that hasn't really been in the SEC Wars, but he's really talented. WRs look quick and have good hands, but we need a BIG WR: Beckham, Landry and Shep all look pretty good, but we don't have a big WR/ TE threat like Randle or D Peterson. TE's haven't been very impressive in the passing game: We've got several that are descent run blockers, but I think we're still looking for someone to step up and be a receiving threat. Overall I was impressed and satisfied. It was a spring game. Our 2012 LSU team is going to be another really good team. 10 wins or more is definately within this team's reach.
Just looking at QBs alone, both Mett and Rivers' pocket awareness are light years beyond anything we've had the last 4 years. Checking off, stepping up in the pocket under pressure, etc. And Freak Johnson is gonna eat a lot of people's lunches next season.
The problem is that the Les Miles passing game does not use the Tight End. He has that BigTen philosophy that the TE is simply a 6th lineman.
Another person who was there tells me Kevin Minter looks like he's ready to step up and be a big time player. Did he impress any of you guys?
But everyone knows that was really Jimbo's offense. They also know that all of LSU's offensive problems for the past 4 years are because Les has never heard of the forward pass and handcuffed Crowton's genius behind the scenes. It's just common knowledge.
What bothered me is the fact that only those attending the game were able to see the game. In the recent past, the game has been on television. Why after the successful season we had, did LSU football suddenly become like persona non grata? Certainly after shedding two mediocre quarterbacks, and fielding one with talent, the networks would see the logic of showcasing the next NCAA College football champions. But, no network was interested. In the future, when broadcast contracts are negotiated, make the broadcast of the Spring game, an absolute must.
