Sucks, sure we have talent returning kicks, but our kick coverage is atrocious. With all the athletes LSU has in the cupboard, there is no reason LSU should be giving up around 30 yards a kick. Is this because LSU is so young?
2007, he was the special teams coach when LSU won a national championship. That's his defense, not saying I agree with it.
Pushing for high kicks to promote short returns (if coverage is good) is good strategy but only works if you cover it well. Just kick the damn thing out of the end zone and be done with it. It's not like he can't do it. They want those high, shorter kicks to give the coverage team that extra second to get down and in position to make a tackle around the 10-15 yard line.
How does LSU get better coverage because you know this staff. They will do the same f'n thing over and over again until either the season ends or they get it right. Change isn't an option.
Totally stole my post. Now, the guy that is out giving a handy to some scout while they eat lunch at Landry's will tell you that BDP is just the cats ass, don't get much better. Or his other one, "well who would you hire"
That's the thing. Coaches and people who know coaches will rave about him. The return game is fine. It's the coverage that sucks and it's not just kick off coverage it's punt coverage too.
I was really hoping that was not the case, because it's a really stupid roll of the dice. Taking a chance of 5-10 yards better field position while giving the opposition a chance to return every kick against poor coverage just isn't smart. Kick it out the endzone, have no chance at returns and make them go the length of the field every time. It's too much risk for very little reward.
I just remember CLM saying this in interviews last season...that that's what they were trying to accomplish. Gamble apparently has a bigger leg but Domingue is better at the high, long kicks.
Which is really surprising with a Les Miles team. The smart thing is being conservative and he isn't? Makes no sense.
