Amazing how quickly things can change. Williams was a hero in 2009 but his defense sure has sucked this year.

His defense has kinda sucked every year. It's just that in 2009 we had a little better rush and Spencer who was picking off everything. We still gave up gobs of yardage. Watching the playoffs this weekend, I'd forgotten what NFL defenses were supposed to look like.

Williams single-handedly threw away the Saints last 2 Super Bowls.

This team has a legit chance at being the first team ever to 3 peat.

I hate this man. I hope he fails in St. Louis and never gets another job.

A little info on Spag-NOLA you would be interested in:

In 2006, the NY Giants registered 32 sacks (rather pedestrian like the Saints have been under Gregg Williams the past 3 seasons).

The first year he took over as DC of the Giants, they vaulted all the way to #1 in the league with 53 sacks (one of the highest numbers recorded over the past 10 years in fact).

They had 42 in 2008 as well (good for 6th in the NFL that season).

After a year as St. Louis head coach, that team went from an abysmal 25 sacks to 43 (7th in the NFL). Had another 39 this season.

He doesn't send in 6 or 7 guys to get there either. He has creative scheming of his defensive line to get to the QB.

Players who will benefit the most will be Galette, Jordan and hopefully Romeus. Include Will Smith in that list if he isn't a cap casualty.

I would agree with this if your point is that he didn't get players to perform at their highest level. To this point, I could argue that GW had to call so many all-out blitzes because the guys up front couldn't get the job done on their own. And this is the only thing that makes me nervous about the Spags hire. Everyone points to how could his NYG defenses were, but they had some serious talent on the d-line. He won't have nearly as much to work with here. One can only hope he will also upgrade the organization's ability to evaluate defensive talent coming out of college.

ETA: should have read your follow-up post before I wrote this.

Justin Tuck was another failed year away from being out of the NFL had it not been for SpagNOLA.

On to Williams, who in their phucking mind sends a 6 man blitz with single coverage on the only man who had beaten you all day long and that could beat you in that circumstance, with only 40 seconds left and at least 30 yards away from even attempting a FG? Gregg Williams would. The two previous pass completions by Smith netted 18 yards and took 45 seconds off the clock. Do the math.

Drew Brees won that game for us twice, and Williams pissed it away twice. The 2nd time, unforgivable. And this team would have wiped the Giants off the field and won by at least 3 TDs. And we would have beaten the Patriots as well.

Ok, so, ditch Roman Harper, Scott Shanle, and get 2 new linebackers and new safety. Also get more depth at corner. Offense is fine, they shouldn't even draft any offense in the off season, unless it's a receiver late in the draft, or depth at the O Line, maybe a new Center is needed. But seriously, Spags and Loomis, and SP need to hit the defensive side of the ball baaaaad, because if the Saints had an resemblance of a D, they would be Super Bowl bound and Champs this season.

I agree with all of this but I'll add that I think they'd have a better chance in free agency. Hopefully a couple of established vets, definitely at least one corner, one outside linebacker, and a safety, bare minimum.

This team's window of opportunity is beginning to close. I sure hope they get it right.

What did you see this year that leads you to believe that? Offensively, who's game appears to be in decline? The key players in free agency will get re-signed; Loomis is as good as anyone in the business at working the cap. Yes, we need improvement on the defensive side, but that's what Spag has been hired to do.

    Let me clarify.

Hopefully he's a better chess player than Williams and will have his pieces in better positions. This offense can break all kinds of records, score points, and win awards, but in the end, if the defense doesn't improve, drastically improve, the window of opportunity WILL close.
