A number, actually many, US military commanders opined, openly, after the war, that they would have been put to death as war criminals had the Allies not prevailed. In particularly, the ranks of the Eighth Air Force would have been rife with war criminals, hundreds and probably thousands would have been executed.

the "Confederate flag" was only the flag of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. although two versions of the CSA national flag had it as part of their flags.

this flag would not exist in 20th-21st century if it werent for the klan. some southern states adopted csa-like flags curiously during the civil rights era. im sure that was all about honoring their dead ancestors.

“I think it wiser moreover not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavoured to obliterate the marks of civil strife and to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered,” -- R E Lee

    well said, bob

Indeed. Film exists of US infantry summarily executing German prisoners of war who were foolish enough to get captured at the death camps they were guarding.

As I said personally fly it all you want, but this is the United States, not CSA. It shouldnt be apart of any statehouse that belongs to all people. The flag represents history and heritage, but a history and heritage that no one should be proud of and thats just my opinion. If you are proud of secession and wanting to continue to own human beings and treat them like shit and property, then have at it and fly it as you please. I cant tell people what to do on private property.

Another thing I want to point out. Republicans are being incredibly smart about this, especially those that got out in front of this from the beginning. Black people in the south are naturally conservative to extent, they refuse to vote for republicans because of this very issue of race and how the republicans have treated the race issue for 40 plus years. Mark my word, this will get republicans black voters in the south.

That's the thing though, to the politicians and aristocrats of the south, the civil war was about slavery and the protection of slavery. To the Generals, it was about the defense of their homeland. Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson probably would have fought for the Union had Lincoln not planned on invading Virginia.

Shit it seems like everyone is banning the flag now, and the General Lee may the confederate flag removed. This is nothing but a smokescreen. It's policy that needs to change, not the existence of a flag.

Not policy, but a mindset. As Ben Watson wrote yesterday (I'm paraphrasing), if you're not taking the flag down because of a change of heart, what's the point?

I don't know about anyone else, but my reaction to being forced to do something I don't want to do is anger and resentment. Why should it be different for a racist who's being ordered to give up the symbol of his racism? The families of the shooting victims who are extending a hand of forgiveness to Roof are doing far more to curb racism than the reactionaries who are targeting the flag.
