I guess I'm one of the few that has a problem with taking the flag down. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. I think every southern state should be forced to fly that flag a symbol of shame, like a Scarlett Letter. I can't really understand the message people get from seeing that flag fly because I'm not persecuted as a white guy.....but what about American Indians. What does the American flag say to them everytime they look at that flag? I don't know, I just have a problem with censorship of any kind, and if the state voted to keep it, I think they should be able to.
Here is the thing, and I was going to ask @LSUMASTERMIND this. I don't get the outrage. It's a stupid rag and while there were some atrocities that took place under it that isn't the only thing it was about. I just don't get it. To get all worked up over it to me is as silly as the one tooth Bubba's that screw their cousins while laying on a bed covered with it. It's a dead symbol
That's sort of the back door to my point. The issues we have in this country have nothing to do with a stupid flag
If the Confederate flag is just a "stupid rag," what is your stance on people that burn the American flag? It is also just a stupid rag? I agree it's a dead symbol, but Southern racists do love them some Confederate flag. I think that is the point. I was driving through Denham Springs. Louisiana, last summer, and a pick up truck with two Bubbas pulled up beside me with not one, but two huge Confederate flags flying from the bed of the truck. They looked ignorant as hell, but I'm sure they were proud of the flag they were flying.
I agree and at least we still call them "American", first, then "Indian." If they're against segregation, why go stick "African" in front of "American." I guess we should all start putting, "European" or whatever fits in front of "America" to follow suit. Boy I can hear the cries of claiming "White Supremacy" now. Initially, with Roof, people were wanting to believe his bitterness was due to upbringing...not. Even a black friend of his said he wasn't always radical like that. People don't want to validate the many claims that Obama has deepened race relations in this country with how he's made so many situations ABOUT race. Roof was not nearly the only person who was infuriated with how T. Martin's situation was made a black/white issue. Sadly, the trigger-man was not even "white." The black community ran with it though - as did the white community. Lines were drawn and people ended up not caring about what really happened. Screw the facts. Just like the criminal D. Wilson shot down. Da hell with the facts. So much was based on his thug friend's statement, which we later found out was not true. Let's burn down the town, we can sort out the facts later. We don't own shit anyway so what do we have to lose?
I grew up thinking that flag was just a symbol of the South- like "We're country." Listening to a lot of country music had a lot to do with that, I guess. Who here looked at the General Lee and thought it had ANYTHING to do with racism? People ALLOW it to "mean" something bad. Until minorities let go, themselves, they allow themselves to be held hostage to such things by radical idiots who take advantage of it.
