Sources: Arkansas to hire Wisconsin's Bret Bielema

I think its a solid hire for Ark but Im not sure he is what they need. Ark will never recruit as well as LSU, Bama, Auburn, or probably aTm. They need a gimmick to draw kids in, the pass happy, spread style attack was good for that. Im not sure Bilema will do that. On the other hand is great at coaching up kids. UW never recruited like OSU or UM but competed at a high level by getting under the radar kids and coaching them up.

While UW to Ark is a lateral move Im not sure it was the right move for Bielema. The Big Ten is an easier conference. You have OSU who stands out at the top, with UM and UW not too far behind. Here in the SEC you have LSU and Bama up at the top in the SECW. You have Auburn who I think willl be resurrected back to the top under Malzahn, a great offensive mind. You now have aTm under Sumlin on a roll. He seems like an excellent coach who has the face of college football for at least another year to help recruiting. Being the SEC may help them compete better with Texas for instate kids. So Im not sure that Ark stays on the same tier that theyve been the last few years.

 

This may be exactly why Bielema wants to be in the SEC. The Big Ten was an absolute joke this year, and if the teams don't improve soon, they will likely not be taken very seriously in the near future. The SEC is king--whether others want to admit it or not.

Coaches are naturally competitive. Their egos want more, not less, competition. Think about how fans are not as excited about a game against a cupcake, then imagine how hard it is to motivate a team as the coach of a school that plays cupcake after cupcake in conference, even. The SEC is the pinnacle of college football.

 

I agree with everything youre saying. The SEC is certainly the best conference and you should want to face the best. I also agree that the Big Ten was a joke this year. Its been for a few years now. Still, Im not sure its a great move. Like I said, Im not sure Ark will stay on the same level its been the last 5-8 years. While UW is pretty much guaranteed to be second or third in the Big Ten. You have a much better chance at UW to play in the BCS than you do at Ark. You also have a much better shot at going unbeaten and walking into a BCSCG. Much tougher to do that in the SEC.

 

Hope he didn't leave the B1G because he saw the future and it looked like Urban Meyer. Wasn't that long ago that Urban took a hard look at the future of the SEC and decided that the B1G was a good spot for Urban renewal.

 

Talking with a former SEC coach the other day, he ranked the r-kansas job a little lower than barn or tenn. Bielema is one to keep an eye on with his staff. Remember when nick came to LSU, Pete Jenkins and Jimbo helped him adapt, Les kept Jimbo, got Karl Dunbar and a few more. Many times a coach from up North will not see this as a problem.
