what i'm saying is we're an elite program in every way except for the offense, especially against teams that are as talented and deep as we are. if our offense doesn't wear other teams down and score late in the game then we lose because we don't do much in the first half. winning is good, but winning championships is great. i don't need to tell anyone here but you have a lot better chance to win championships if you have balance in all 3 phases of the game. if we're going to compete with bama and who knows who in the future we can't be lacking in any phase. however, if you're satisfied for second, then i have no argument. we got exposed big time last year against bama in the ncg. even though we played for the nc last year we were 81st in total offense and 99th in passing offense in the country. is that not a sign that other parts of the team didn't carry more than it's load? that's been the case (or worse) since 2007, when matt flynn was here. i love every thing about lsu football, but just wish there was some tweaking to make us the monster that we can be and that's been created in alabama. and i agree, the biggest stat is wins vs losses. and recruiting is a huge part of that. but these high school kids are seeing us struggle on the offensive side of the ball year and year have to be taking notice. the ones we want also have a further goal of one day playing on sundays. even though i may really want to play for lsu i'd also have the consider what is best for my future.
We are a few completions per game away from being the best team in the country. LSU with a passing game would be a nightmare. Perhaps it would not be fair, and the football gods just won't allow it!? Geaux Tigers!
It tells me that your hatred of Miles colors everything you say. Miles has recruited top quarterbacks as well as anybody, but has had bad luck with keeping them for 3-4 years. Perrilloux was a 5-star slacker who got dismissed. Shepard was a 5-star who got moved to receiver, Another left for major league baseball before ever playing. Mettenberger was a top prospect, the top JC quarterback.
We should put this to the test. Let's have LSU play a CUSA or Sun Belt schedule for an entire season, and ULM or La Tech can play ours. Then let's see what kind of numbers Mett puts up compared to the unknown superstuds they have at QB who somehow flew under our radar.
The only problem I see with that is Sheppard wasn't recruited as a QB and the baseball prospect was a long shot at best to stay with the Tigers. Miles has been inadequate both recruiting and developing QB's. If Rettig sticks that could all change.
My comments neither state nor imply the message that I believe the quarterbacks at ULM, and La Tech, are stellar. They are decent though. Browning seems to be the better of the two. I beg to differ with some of you. My bet would have Browning outplaying Mettenberger by a sizable margin. Note, sizable margin does not equal heroic maneuvers from the quarterback. In this scenario, it's more akin to proficient play from behind center. I do take into account that more likely than not any quarterback playing in this "Leslie" approved offense would likely fail. It's just a matter of how bad they would fail. But, as long as it has the official "Leslie" stamp of approval then it's a go.
