Ok, I root for the Saints, it's hard not to root for Drew Brees, and Darren Sproles, and Devry Henderson. Don't care for Mark Ingram, still think that was a wasted pick, but that isn't what this is about. As a casual observer, and not really a Saints fanatic, I feel that I can give a good unbiased opinion. I have watched every Saints game this season, and other than the Lions, I think the Saints have the dirtiest defense in the league. I can't even tell you how many times I have seen Roman Harper hit people when they were down, not let go of their legs when trying to get up, and just playing down right dirty. Malcom Jenkins too, but that dude is in my opinion one of the best safeties in the league, so I give him some leeway. Is it just me?
as a casual observer Im sure you heard the announcers mention this 100x this year when the opposition cried after brees lit them up. you notice these things not so subliminally. as well as suh and detroit. its only mentioned all the time. every original thought nowadays is planted in someones head without them even realizing it. this is a good example. id like to hear actual opinions on sports that wasnt spouted by cowherd or the other 100 blowhards on espn or elsewhere who say the same things over and over.
that's funny because I don't listen to the volume when I watch NFL games. And I haven't heard the first person say anything about them being dirty.
The "reputation" started with the '09 NFCCG when the world leapt to Brett Favre's defense after the Saints had the unmitigated gall to hit him. Then Gregg Williams made it worse with the "remember me shots" comment. Bobby McCray seemed to be the one most deserving of the rep, but he's gone now. I don't see it at all with Jenkins. Harper does have the tendency to go high, and the refs are really on him. He's not at the Suh, Harrison level, but he's got to change his approach. The stuff about tackling a guy low, and then standing up while still holding the other guy's foot? Lots of players do that. It seems to be a "swagger" gesture that personally I don't get, but its out there and I don't think its going to change.
I've watched every game for 40+ years. What I see is aggressive defense which is something we lacked in about 35 of the 40+ years. I don't see dirty play, honestly. But I am happy we are getting the rep as long as the refs don't buy in and start acting like SEC officials, wearing blinders or having bad vision.
Well Harper has been a dirty player this year. The hit on Steve Smith of Carolina in the endzone 5 yards deep was a real pussy move. And the horrendous facemask of the Titans receiver that nearly tore his head off.
The hit on Smith was uncalled for. In the past, Steve Smith has showboated after scoring and deserved to be hit. This was a rare exception. I don't agree at all with your assessment of the facemask on the Titan. If he doesn't grab the facemask, the guy scores. The penalty ended up costing the Saints less than 5-yards and gave us a chance to force a field goal attempt instead of a TD. Put in that position, I would've done whatever I had to do to prevent the TD as well. In the end, I say screw Steve Smith. He's asked for it so many times in the past, he got what was long overdue IMO. I hope our safeties beat the hell out of him Sunday.
