The list doesn't end with these two, Maurice Clarett, OJ and countless other athletes who we've never heard of.
But how much can you teach a guy at 20, 21, or 22 years old at that point of his life about right and wrong. Its up to him if he wanted to learn or not, I agree Osbourne didnt do him any favors, but personal responsibility and common sense, has to take over at some point.
If he made a statement by punishing Phillips severely he would have had to do it to all of his players. And unfortunately for the fans in Nebraska they probably would not have been able to field a team that fall.
