I agree, but it's one of the oldest rules in baseball, part of the original, "20 rules of baseball" ratified in 1845. Knickerbocker Baseball Rules - Baseball Almanac
What, is your dealer out of town this weekend? The only bitter up in this thread is you, darlin. That rule, more than any other, makes softball parents of youngers the absolute BANE of coaches. Most parents aren't following how many outs, whether 1st is occupied, etc so on the dropped 3rd, most start yelling "RUN" and the kids get confused, start to run, and all hell breaks loose. Even the runner on 1st may step off because she sees someone coming, then they can get tagged out. Happened more than once to our teams. I think once players get to 12U, you don't see it hardly anymore.....parents are more edumacated by then, lol.
Even worse for the parents of young pitchers. They get what should be a K but the catcher drops and runner reaches. Confidence killer.
Assuming it is not a wild pitch that was swung at, it's scored as E2 but that was not what I was speaking to. It's that younger pitcher having to pitch to another batter and base runners that turn into runs. For example, when my youngest daughter was 10 she had 14 K's in a game one night. I think it was 8 that reached on dropped third strike and we ended up losing. We had catcher issues, obviously.
Without a doubt. SO frustrating because they are throwing good stuff but the stats and sometimes the W/L column don't reflect it. Our coach was a huge-hearted type who stuck with the same catcher because he felt bad for her home situation. She not only cost us in dropped 3rd's, but her basic glove positioning was horrible and she never learned to master the sell.....move the glove a wee bit and hold in the zone so if the ump isn't sure, he might be convinced. Really good catchers do that but if they don't, even a pitch that's in the zone but close can get called a ball. One ump pulled our coach aside after we lost a game and told him that our catcher was single-handedly costing us wins.
damn, Sooners defeat Ducks,.. Florida vs Oklahoma,.. in the, "now I don't give a shit", finals. getting closer to football.
