you're right, in '03 we never came close to beating a Florida team that was unranked at the time, and fired their coach the next year. Hell, we didn't score at all on offense that day. the 2 games we lost in '07 we were at least competitive.
Yep, I remember commenting (and others doing the same) how everything had fallen our way in '03, that maybe it would happen again that last weekend in '07...and when it did, how WV was our new Hawaii. USC pounded Notre Dame, and then when Syracuse beat them, it diminished USC's SOS. Hawaii's loss did the same. The fact is, despite their conference CG loss, Oklahoma was going to the BCSCG that year with the formula, and it was a toss up between LSU and USC (with games needed to fall a certain way for us to leap over USC...which we did, but a very tiny margin). The teams were different, obviously, and had different strengths and weaknesses (and they each had both). But we were deserving of both BCS berths and wins. You can argue about certain qualities of the '03 team being better than the '07 team, but neither team was in charge of their destiny that year, not by a long shot.
our starting QB got hurt in '07 too. difference is that our backup beat a 10 win Tennessee team in the SEC CG. their backup still hasn't played against a 10 win team, yet they still lost 3 games in a row
I agree with you here as well, but I was just pointing out that more than a few games had to align for us in '07.
What I am saying is that I would rather LSU lose one low-scoring defensive struggle in the rain (19-7) at home than to lose two high scoring bouts with one late in the season at home. 13-1 (8-1 SEC) > 12-2 (7-2 SEC) You do agree that one loss is better than two, right? And that LSU in '03 was gaining steam, while LSU in '07 was losing steam? Besides, Florida was 8-5 in '03 and fired their coach. Arkansas was 8-5 in '07 and fired their coach.
Who was running Crowton's offense when Oregon's offensive production plummeted in his second year there, and Dennis Dixon looked befuddled? The same Dennis Dixon that was getting Heisman talk a year later with a new OC. Who was running Crowton's offense at BYU, that went from a record setting offense the first year (ala LSU 2007) to abysmally worse in each subsequent year? Who was running Crowton's offense that started off strong with the Bears and resulted in the HC yanking playcalling priveleges from him near the end of his second season, because the team was so bad? I'll tell you one damn thing: It sure wasn't Les Miles that established that pattern. If Les is taking things over, he's just the latest in a long line of coaches that had to do it. What he should have done was fired Crowton last year.
i agree completely. i wasn't real happy with either of those games. just pointing out that we've had issues and played down to our competition every single year i can remember. even in '03 with quite possibly the best college defense i've ever seen.
You guys can't be serious. You think a former offensive lineman, and offensive lines coach is behind a modified pistol, and 5 wide formations? Anything I formation, 2 tight ends and some shotgun formations are Miles, all that other madness is Crowtons. Crowton either cannot call plays, cannot figure out which personnel can work his offense the best, or is just so damned predictable that it's easy as hell to scheme him. This offense is Crowton's. Miles isn't the problem, Crowton is. Miles could very well just be like what the President of United States should be, a figure head that surrounds himself with the people that get the job done, and unfortunately Gary Crowton is one crappy ass General. I really think Miles wanted Crowton gone but it was not financially beneficial at the time. Billy Gonzales will be the OC before too long, i can feel it.
