Timing wise I agree, however from what I saw ( only saw it once and was chasing kids around) it looked like pad to helmet and not helmet to helmet. I guess the spirit of the rule says he led with the helmet so idk, I'd have to see it again to see if it was a warranted ejection. I didn't see a bunch of hooplah here so I'm guessing there wasn't much to argue about.
I don't think it was intentional. I think they need to change that word. Targeting implies the defender intentionally went for a head shot.
I don't think targeting has to be helmet to helmet. I'm not sure if he intended to hit him in the head, but he definitely went high and didn't try to avoid the head. Just wasn't a smart play and was probably the correct call.
Sorry, targeting. Mental breakdown. Let me bring you pumpahs back to reality. The third rate Auburn QB waddling down the field, under escort for a score. Pitiful.
Except for the Nick Saban era, where he liked the defense to be shifting all the time, this is characteristic of LSU. Line up and play solid defense. Nick liked a pro-style offense where it is vital to try to confuse top NFL quarterbacks. Few college dual-threat quarterbacks are that effective or smart at reading defenses and all that shifting is overkill and sometimes confuses your own guys.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentional. Stupid not to pull up but not intentional. Usually when a player targets another player's head he lowers his head and uses his helmet as an intentional weapon. That wasn't the case for Jones. The 15 yard penalty was the correct call but the ejection and suspension were not. That rule should be modified but it won't be. With all the attention on player safety they are not about to change any rule having to do with safety.
