Have you forgotten that the President of Russia was Dmitry Medvedev during Obama's first term? Medvedev was not confrontational with the West and a reset made good sense, while Putin was out of office. As noted before the missile defense system was always a bargaining chip, which is why Bush dragged his feet for 8 years without implementing it. It was a trade to get Russia's support in the denuclearization of Iran. And we got it.
