"It’s not about the return of Crimea to Russia. It’s about something else completely: the fact that the American hegemony in the world and the capacity of overthrowing regimes, initiating massacres will come to an end. If Russia will stand its ground, and we insist on international law, on adherence to democratic procedures, on legality and peaceful resolution of problems, in reality it’s simple. Putin will become the first person of world politics. And Obama, the second. "

No 123 it is Putin's avowed goal of reintegrating the old Soviet empire. Putin is taking advantage of the weakness of the past 2 presidents and the fact their focus was on the ME. Both W & Obama have underestimated the ruthlessness and willingness of Putin to use force to gain his goals. He did it in Georgia under Bush and is doing it again in Ukraine. It remains to be seen where he will stop his troops but the effect will be to put pressure on the former soviet republics as it will show they can't count on the west. It may also ratchet up the divide between the US & Europe and Russia.
Russia is reverting back to its past. It is a kleptocracy (?sp) where the rule is not by law but the powerful. It is no different that it was under the Tsar or the commies and the Russian people are and will be paying the price. Russia will stay isolated from the main stream of world development until it can evolve into a country where there is some respect for law and order. It will remain a backwater where only its size and military power gives it any standing. The old threat of the Russian bear is all it has.
Putin's status will be short lived. The dynamism of the US will always overawe the stasis of Russia. Putin is not and will not become the first person in the world.

How on earth did you conclude I agree with it? I didn't even say anything. :confused:It was an article to read from over there.

    You poorly assume.

Posting a link to an article isn't a de facto agreement. It is news and it is interesting.

See my post on the other thread. Putin is the one taking all the risks here. If he fails badly, it could be the political end for him.
