http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080801/ap_en_ce/people_snoop_dogg_bus For those all on the "this is great publicity for the program" bandwagon. Snoop's tour bus was pulled over in Dallas and 2 were arrested on drug charges. It is an absolute crime with a capital C that this clown is allowed to coach youth football.
I actually agree with the above, it's just a shame that good rap music has to be accompanied by illegal drugs and exploitation of women.
Somehow it remains possible for me to listen to 90's rap despite my disagreeance* with just about every topic spoken of within the music. I must be real good at avoiding cognitive dissonance. *I love this non-word
Yeah that sucks that Snoop got arrested. Most young black males get really turned off that someone who gave props to the program had some friends who were arrested, for a very small amount of pot. Most young black males are really galvanized against weed and it's harmful effects. And you are totally right, it is better to not let him help poor black kids learn a team sport and the values of working together, because you know, he might toke on the reefer. What a crime! Oh wait, he didn't get arrested? It was just two other people on the bus? Damn. But screw that, let's get pissy about it anyway!
Not to point out the overly obvious, but yes... it is currently a crime to possess, use, or distribute THC. Therefore, society might want to prevent the possibility of a criminal (and I use this definition VERY loosely) from educating young children about the benefits of an illegal drug. I do not want to again revisit the discussion about whether or not THC should be legal, I was just clairifying (lol) his point.
I get what you are saying, but I don't think Snoop ever tried to educate the young about the benefits of marijuana. He might make references to it in his music, but rap music has always been about the reality of life in the ghetto. I think the fact that he volunteers his time and money to help young kids should not be overshadowed by the fact that he smokes it up. I'm pretty sure he doesn't do it around kids, or encourage them to do it themselves. Quote from Snoop: ""It's so easy for a kid to join a gang, to do drugs," Snoop said. "We should make it that easy to be involved in football and academics." I think for someone like him to overcome a brutal, gang influenced childhood and try to help kids in similar circumstances is great. He could just be like 90% of the other rappers out there and not give a damn about anything but hoes and bling.
