of course we all know this but seeing the actual numbers is pretty staggering. it blows my mind actually.

yet I have to wear my seat belt?

Around 5.4 million deaths a year are caused by tobacco.

    * Smoking is set to kill 6.5 million people in 2015 and 8.3 million in 2030, with the biggest rise in low-and middle-income countries.

    * Every 6.5 seconds a current or former smoker dies, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

    * An estimated 1.3 billion people are smokers worldwide (WHO).

Over 443,000 Americans (over 18 percent of all deaths) die because of smoking each year.

1.2 million people in China die because of smoking each year. That's 2,000 people a day.

Tobacco use will kill 1 billion people in the 21st century if current smoking trends continue.

I guess we need this for population control but still. a freaking billion people.

33 percent to 50 percent of all smokers are killed by their habit.
    * Smokers die on average 15 years sooner than nonsmokers.

I have nothing against smokers. to each his own. But who wants to drown in their own fluid with a slow, agonizing death. I've seen it happen and its not pleasant. 1200 americans die each day due to smoking.

with a little math, in 3 days thats more than the number of people who died on 9/11.

is there anything close to being as deadly as smoking that is so widespread? I suppose heart disease but thats attributed to smoking as well.

by comparison, I think 40,000 people die in the US from auto accidents.

thats about a months worth from smoking.

It's weak people who smoke. They'd rather die a slow premature death somewhere down the road than put up now with a month or so of cold turkey agony.

oops my fault i didnt see your auto crashes number in the OP.

interesting. i also guess it is hard to tell what causes what. non-smokers get lung cancer too, never can tell if a smoker got it because they smoked. and fat people basically die more from everything. i think they are even more likely to get cancer. but lets say being fat make you 10% more likely to get cancer. do we then attribute 10% of cancer deaths to obesity. it is really hard to figure.

but your point is certainly true, if you give a damn about yourself or anyone else that like you, you should stop smoking. and if you can convince a friend to stop smoking, you are a ****ing hero.

i always think people that smoke are kinda stupid. why did they start? every kid likes to smoke a few times to be rebellious, but the moment you realize yu are starting to crave a smoke you should never touch another.

Guess I'm just a glutton for punishment. I've quit cold-turkey 3 times now, all for more than a year, one time for 3 years. Then one day I go tailgating, have a few drinks, and watch a really close and exciting game and BANG.. back at it. It's cyclical for me.

FWIW, the cold turkey thing really isn't that bad. It's more a matter of keeping yourself busy instead of reaching for a smoke out of boredom.. For me anyway.

And for the record, I don't disagree. Addictions are a result of weakness (of SOME type) in my opinion. But at the same time, it's not like all people who smoke have never gone through the cold turkey thing, or fear it for that matter. My dad once told me, to quit smoking (or drinking, or anything), you have to be ready to quit. If you pick it back up a couple years down the road then you weren't ready or didn't want to quit bad enough. I agree with him.

b/c its ingrained into society and apparently cultures abroad. you will hardly see a teenage girl that doesnt smoke in the US it seems. moreso than boys in my experience. I dont know the numbers but its always seemed that way. I think maybe because girls are curbing their appetites while teenage boys are never full and are probably eating bc they dont give a ****.

they are claiming 50k die from second hand smoke. now talk about a number impossible to prove or even guesstimate.

Yep. Coughing your guts out at 2 am and hacking up green crap is a thrill a minute. And how about the cardio workout you get from walking to the kitchen from the recliner. And the pleasing aroma that lingers long after you've left the room. The cancer thing is underrated as well. You can lose 100 pounds without exercising. Yeah, it's all good.
