Not happy with the defense either but I am also not getting my panties in wad and thinking it's the end of LSU. We lost far too many on defense to think we would be as good as we were last year. New DC, new scheme always has attrition. We DID improve last weekend and I bet we will keep improving. As far as Ika well who knows. Maybe he doesn't like the new scheme or doesn't like Bo, maybe he was getting pushed too hard by his backup or maybe screw him. Moore got beat out by Gaye maybe he doesn't like that so screw him too. Too many here ready to throw in the towel. I trust O will correct this defense.
The problem with the defense is that the problems are so fundamental. Eli Ricks missing a coverage every now and then as a true freshman is expected. Damone Clark and Jacoby Stevens repeatedly being out of position and missing assignments against the run was not expected and not acceptable. I’ll give Bo time to correct it, but he’s getting an F so far this season.
O isn’t an X/O guy, he’s the glue guy. Starting out scraping the bottom of the barrel and losing guys on top of that is a failure on O’s part, whatever the excuse. Les had plenty of excuses. He has his work cut out to keep this season from derailing and move forward with the 4-3. A mediocre record isn’t something Bama/Clemson has had in quite some time. I’m hopeful about AU, but I’m not optimistic; their RB and WR scare me. Steele also seems to be a much better coach than I gave him credit for, and he’s going up against a true freshman. Hope we can run the ball better than we did to start the season. I’m going with my heart for the win, but that takes blind faith.
I agree that O isn’t an X’s and O’s guy, I think even he can fix these problems. If he can’t, he gets some of the blame too. Gap responsibility is incredibly fundamental and simple.
It works. Coach told me to stay home for a play during a playoff game in the superdome when I was a CB. Ended up with a interception and gave the team the opportunity for a go ahead touchdown. Lost the following game but it was a highlight. Good coaches and coachable players can go a long way. As for the players opting out or going the transfer portal route, if they don't want to be here it's better for them to be some place else.
